Cont: The Trump Presidency 11: Insert something funny

I only caught a glimpse of it on live TV. However, to be fair, at some point others in the front row including Michelle Obama had placed theirs on the kneeler in front of them also. But as far as I know, everyone except Trump picked theirs up again and followed along with the service.

There's also been some criticism because Trump stood there scowling while everyone else was reciting the Apostle's Creed. The words were printed in the program, but they may have been too big for his reading ability, with no pictures.

There really does seem to be this thing whereby the side that lies cheats and steals believes the lying, cheating and stealing to be standard practice across the board so, whenever there's evidence of wrongdoing, they firmly believe it's been cooked up because that's what they'd do.
I think that was behind the GOP's initial dismissing of the Russia allegations. They'd just come off of six years yelling BENGHAZI BENGHAZI BENGHAZI and throwing up sham "investigations," so of course the Democrats were going to do the same thing.

There's a few video clips of people, Fox News talking heads and whatnot, suddenly looking confused or panicked when they realize in the middle of an interview that it's not just BS, that Trump really did those things and this jackass they're talking to really is lying about it to cover it up. Luckily no one in today's GOP had any principles left, or Trump might have had a problem.

Why would you put your hand over your heart there?

I was in the military. Im extremely uncomfortable putting my hand over my heart at an event because

Saluting was what I learned to do instead of hand over heart
You do not salute in formation

And when I'm at an event like that, I feel like I'm in formation. So I just stand there.

I have no idea of the exact protocol, but most other people there seem to be. I think the key point, however, is :

"I was in the military."

Trump was not, and can in no way use that as an explanation. Frankly I think whether or not he put his hand over his heart or not is basically irrelevant. But it seems to matter to a lot of people, a lot of people who are Trump supporters, who would (and did) castigate Obama under similar circumstances. (my recollection is that the Obama incident was during the National Anthem)

Why are you talking about if this would be an excuse for Trump? I didn't mention Trump.

The post you responded to was a picture of Trump.

I realise now that it was foolish of me to assume any connection. Carry on.

Being in formation means standing in line with one’s peers. I strongly suspect that the president does not consider anyone in that room to be his peer.

A weak argument in favor of doing it is that if the hundreds of people around you are placing their hands over their hearts or are saluting, then it is bad optics to not do likewise. But the president lives in his own world and does not understand why certain things are considered poor form. Hence, his yelling at his staff about their not telling him that skipping a memorial service in France would look so bad that it would become the lead story for an entire news cycle.

To clarify, an individual doesn't salute on his own initiative while in formation. The formation leader will give the order to Present Arms, and the salute is done by the formation, not an individual.

However, standing in any group is NOT a formation, so that's neither here nor there.

Also, saluting is for while in uniform; the hand-over heart is generally what's expected when in civilian dress.

In any case, Trump was never military, so none of that applies.

As to why they had hand over heart, because there happens to be a U.S. flag there. Saluting is also customary at funerals for military veterans (I did funeral detail for several years, where we actually performed the services).

I seriously hate old veterans saluting at things.

How do you feel about non-veterans?

Hmm, despite my earlier words, and while thinking about it, I think that's probably appropriate for the sitting President. While not military, he is the commander-in-chief; but then again, civilian control of the military is supposed to be one of our principals. So I dunno, could see it either way. Couldn't say with any authority, though, with regard to what official protocol should be there.

And really, there's more than enough valid criticisms of our current President that we can skip the small stuff ;)

The ability of one of Trump's lying little tweets to drive the stock market up many points, and then another driving it down just as much, makes me wonder how much money Trump and his family might be making from this process. It would be trivial for him to profit massively off of the predictable swings and because of the broad effects of the tweets on the market rather than on only one stock, it would be difficult to link his actions to any criminal activity involving one specific investment.

He doesn't have a cover.
