That's true, but it's the only way to compare data over time. If you're not looking for a job because you don't want one, you're not unemployed. That includes retirees, students, parents taking time out to care for children, people with medical issues, people who have no marketable skills where they live, etc., etc. That doesn't mean that they'll never work again or they won't look for jobs in the future, but it means that at the time the survey was taken, they weren't competing with others to find work.

Unemployment rates also don't take underemployment into account, but that's a separate issue. If a teacher or a journeyman machinist works at Target or Home Depot because they can't find better jobs in their fields, they might hope something else will come along, but they're not counted as unemployed at this time.

There is a reason why there are official numbers for both overall employment rates and headline unemployment rates. Neither tells the full story in a vacuum. Usually they more or less agree so it isn’t that big a deal but that isn’t the case currently.

I'm looking at u3 vs u6 over the last 30 years. It diverged more than usual at the recession. Right now it maybe is a percentage point off compared to last time unemployment was this low.

These are the guys who took a yer to pass a tax cut, when passing a tax cut was something they all wanted to do. I seriously doubt they'll get their act together enough to do anything else. They'll get stuck arguing amongst various factions that want to screw over widows but not orphans, orphans but not widows, and both widows and orphans.

Of course there is. The Founding Fathers intended the two houses to act as a check on each other. I learned that back in High School Civics. Even when the same party controls both houses there is a lot of tension and suspicion.

Did a little research on collins and hunter. In addition to the felony charges against them:

Duncan Hunter engaged in some pretty racist rhetoric during the election, accusing his opponent of being an Islamic terrorist (despite the fact that he was actually a christian).

Nonetheless the fraction of the US population with jobs is lower than any time between 1985 and 2008. It's even lower than the bottom of the recessions in 1992 and 2002.

Canada’s Senate isn’t elected and traditionally isn’t supposed to alter or impede legislation. In theory it has that power but in the rare cases it tries to use it the outcry is considerable. Again in theory it’s a place where prominent Canadians can take a second look at legislation. In practice it’s where all the political patronage appointments end up, which initially sounds bad but compared to giving them senior positions in actual government departments it’s a pretty good option because they can’t really do much harm in the Senate.

Well in Canada it does prevent it as the Senate is not elected, but appointed.
