Emma Lazarus's poem was solicited as a donation by the committee seeking funding to build the pedestal that the Statue of Liberty was going to stand on.

It would be far more accurate (not to mention honest) to say that she was involved from the beginning of the statue's foundation.

That would not be necessary. The GOP candidates already run almost exclusively on their Trump Mini-me credentials.

Why should the Dems bother adding to something that their opponents already emphasize for them on a daily basis?

It's not "tell another lie", it's "cite another lie". That's legitimate text from the CBP Q&A page. Where they get their information, they don't say, other than the Guatemalan intelligence guy.

CBP has been a jingoist pit for years. They're the clowns requesting the troops that the Pentagon is refusing to provide. Think they're doing this on their own? Or taking instructions from Trump/Miller? It could be either. I've met a lot of customs guys over the years and they're very capable of thinking just like this.

Mmm. There are many responses to that. Quite a few Democrats have made dealing with corruption to be a campaign issue, for example, and measures taken to actually deal with corruption would necessarily also affect Democrats. That Menendez was not convicted, despite it being pushed to trial, is also of some note. That's in contrast to, for example, PA Democrat Vanessa Brown, who's going to jail for accepting bribes.

Given that competence is what I consider to be the most important quality in a candidate for pretty much anything, yeah, I'd definitely be more sympathetic to a competent Republican President than Trump. With that said, what you just said is quite the indictment how blindly partisan the right is. I would be quite fine with the GOP returning to sanity, either way, but I don't expect it anywhere close to soon enough.

Technically Toobin didn’t call him a “racist”, what he said was that he had repeatedly implemented racist voter suppression tactics. Kobach doesn’t have to be a racist in order to do such a thing, all has to be is a despicable Republican partisan who realizes that most black and brown people are Democrats and therefore he figures that in order for Republicans to win, fewer Democrats need to vote. That’s not racism, that’s *******-ism.

And it just so happens that the same day that Toobin confronted Kobach over this, Rachel Maddow had a detailed report on how the county clerk in Dodge City, Kansas — apparently in coordination with Kobach who is still the Kansas Secretary of State — has suspiciously, and without rational justification closed the normal polling place for the entire town and moved to a new inaccessible location outside of town.

And it just so happens that due to a few new meat packing business in the city, the majority of the city now happens to be Latino because they have migrated there to work in those meat packing plants. The move of the polling place was said to be because of “construction” but Maddow sent her producer to the city and found not only that there was no construction there, there are events scheduled at the civic center both just before and just after the day of the election. When they called Kris Kobach’s office about it they said that it was being handled by the local county clerk, when they called the county clerk they referred them to Kris Kobach’s office then they wouldn’t answer any more questions.

There is only one polling place in the entire town, just one. And when the ACLU wrote the county clerk asking her to open other polling places which would actually be inside they town and asked for her help publicizing a help line for voters to help cut down on confusion she forwarded the email to Kobach and added one comment of her own: “LOL”

After the ACLU objected to Dodge City’s single, out-of-town polling place, the local official in charge of elections forwarded to the state an ACLU letter asking her to publicize a voter help line.

“LOL,” she wrote in an email to Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach’s office.

As Election Day approaches, concerns are being raised in Kansas over voting rights and access to the polls. The movement and elimination of some polling places is sparking fears that casting a ballot may be more difficult for some this year.

Nowhere are worries greater than in Dodge City, where residents must leave town if they want to vote on Election Day.

The city has drawn national scrutiny over voting rights since Ford County Clerk Debbie Cox — citing construction — moved its only polling location to a building south of the city limits. The site can’t be reached by sidewalks and is separated from much of the city by train tracks. Sixty percent of the town’s residents are Hispanic.

In addition to this there’s been this ad that Trump posted on his tweeter feed about an undocumented immigrant who ultimately killed to Sacramento County Sheriffs which claims that “DEMOCRATS LET HIM IN” and “DEMOCRATS LET HIM STAY”, then it shows pictures of the what seems like the migrant caravan knocking down fences and being rowdy.

Naturally, the person to defend this racist nonsense is Rick Santorum by whining that “Republicans always get called Racist” — yeah, well, yes but only when they act racist.

Kansas judge rejects voter suppression case, says it's too late to add Dodge City polling location
The judge told the ACLU it was simply too late in the game to add a polling location in Dodge City. For comparison’s sake, the largely white, more conservative city of Lenexa, in the eastern portion of the state, has roughly double the population of Dodge City, but has 12 or more polling locations. And Kansas Republicans can’t find a way to add a second polling location in central Dodge City. It’s outrageous, and, as actress/comedian Sarah Silverman put it, "This is unacceptable ********."

Cheating and denying people their constitutional rights has become the norm in states where Republicans have control of the voting processes. From throwing out voter registrations over small or questionable errors in Georgia, to changing the rules in North Dakota to disqualify 20,000 Native American voters who swung the last election, to removing the one and only polling location serving 27,000 people in Kansas, cheating is the only way they can win. Showing up to vote in numbers they can’t deny is the only way we can win.

Dodge City or the county should be ordered to run a shuttle route to the polling place. Moving it outside city limits is ridiculous. The only upside is, it works well as a glaring example of blatant efforts to suppress votes and I hope it's featured on national news. Or, hell, international news, as people in other countries seem to care as well.

"Construction" was cited ... but how hard can it be to find a school or church that could accommodate those voters?

Rachel Maddow sent somebody to the original polling site. No evidence of any contstruction, or anything else that would impede access, and other events were scheduled as usual. Clearly voter suppression.

My grandfather taught me to vote every time, and he was born in North Carolina in 1900. People like John Lewis still remember fighting for basic rights - and wiil tell you about it, and tell you to vote, and then dance to "Happy" by Pharell.

As I said, don't worry about black people getting hurt. Frankly, I've noticed that it's white people who generally have no idea what racism or supremacism even is, much less how to really stand up for their rights, and so forth. That's why half of you are so terrified by Louis Farrakhan, or why half of you think Black Lives Matter are as scary as the Klan. I seriously think that a lot of you guys had nobody to tell you any of this growing up...

ETA: Lemme go right ahead and call Kobach a racist. He made a conscious decision to deprive people of a very basic right, based on their race. "But you don't know what's in his heart" who cares?

This whole caravan thing and Trump bleating on about how dangerous it is for America reminds of the film. "The Music Man." There was one part where the guy who was trying to swindle the town sang a song about the dangers of pool halls being opened.
Trump is that guy, a cheap swindler trying to peddle his BS. He is just terrified that the House will be won by the Democrats and he might actually have to answer for all the crap he has been doing for the last 2 years. He couldn't care less about immigrants, borders, or the people living in the border states.

Nothing on Halloween is more frightening than this visit to an unsuspecting Western town by a man named Trump -- a litigious narcissist who warns the town of its complete extinction. He proclaims that he, and only he, can save the townsfolk by building a ... well, building a wall of course.

Don't get this confused with the shocking story appearing nightly on MSNBC. This is a 60-year-old television clip. Or is it?
