Cont: The Trump Presidency X: 10-10 'til we do it again

I think there should be a higher bar to becoming president than speechifying.

And it's up to you whether you want that situation to continue, or for qualifications to become important again.

She convinced me that she's smart and knowledgeable, and smart enough to know when to trust others who are more knowledgeable. And she is very progressive and advances its cause with force that rivals few I've seen, and I do believe that's what we really need at this time. In my book, those qualities puts her on the short list of "qualified."

Huh. I didn't think you were serious back there.

Interesting.

If I have to choose between Oprah and Trump I will give up on democracy as a concept.

I'm not a Democrat. I don't have a message beyond Trump is a filthy Russian whore with an intelligence deficient and his supporters are traitors to their country. Democrats should run on health care, wage growth and a return to sound foreign policy.

Not just a return to sound foreign policy, sounder internal policy would be nice. Taking major steps to actually deal with corruption, in particular, is a popular move. Reducing government waste is also always a good thing and one that's directly linked to that in this case.

This lying misogynistic racist jerk seems to have galvanised the electorate.

That was easily predictable, at least, from the moment that he was elected. How much was all that was in question.

Fight corruption? Democrats have done nothing about Bob menendez.

My 2018 election prediction:
  • Trump will soon issue a strident call for the "Second Amendment People" to stop the "violent Dem rioters and friends of cop-killers" from taking over polling places, and "save America."
  • There will be at least one polling place closed down after a shooting.
  • Election results will be declared null by SCOTUS, since many decent white men were scared at the sight of dead liberals. :scared:
  • In the aftermath some months later, SCOTUS will rule that for safety reasons, all future elections must take place in police stations after an ID and police record check, including parking tickets. Working hours only and no weekends; no busing voters as that could be seen as an attack.

Knuckleheads have been doing that first one - along with groups like those True the Vote clowns - for decades. We don't care, and a conservative court wouldn't stop an election because one of us was shot anyway.

Worry about white people - half of y'all spent months losing your minds because two NBPPs with *one* nightstick stood right outside a polling spot in a black neighborhood back in 2008. And if this paragraph angers you...you're probably one of the people to worry about.

If that's what it comes down to on the ballot and you decide to give up on democracy, then I'm not sure you were all-in in the first place.

Given the attitude towards democrats, I feel that it should come from a Republican administration, though. Some return to sanity for the GOP. If the Democrats do it, sure, it might work, but the voters on the right will never accept it. I might be wrong, but it's my feeling that left-leaning voters might be more forgiving of a competent Republican president.

I understand the sentiment, and it would be a terrible choice, but I'd have to give the vote to Oprah or abstain.

Oprah is a very successful businesswoman -- unlike Trump, she really is a self-made success -- which implies skills that Republicans supposedly consider valuable in a man but apparently find intimidating in a woman. She's also not establishment politics, which trumpers supposedly value. I didn't take Oprah seriously, either, but I've changed my mind. And I think she would win against any Republican, which is very important. Each of us can be fairly sure that our own ideal President is almost certainly not to be elected; that's just politics in a democracy. If the choice is to try to make this system work or give up, I'm all in.

If you endorse Winfrey as a candidate, then you're giving up.

Seriously, going from one celebrity who makes money from conning gullible people to another celebrity who makes money from conning gullible people is not a good plan if you care for the future of the United States.
