Banksy strikes again....

Gentlemen, in the interest of science I have used one new X-acto™ knife blade and inserted it into a sheet of printer paper near the bottom of the sheet. I, then, attempted to hold the blade in the orientation that was used in the Banksy clip (with some difficulty, admittedly). With other hand, I pulled the paper in a downwards direction. It proved to be remarkably hard to cut as seen in the video i.e. straight cuts.

I believe with this proof I have, as it were, shredded Banksy's reputation. Thank you.

More likely.

My initial thought when I saw it was it a roller that pulled the painting in on one side and dumped some pre-shredded paper out the bottom. No damage done but point made, and simpler to set up and more reliable than a real made at home shredder. i also couldn't work out the knives on sides bit.

I think the point was that if an artist creates more than one version of a work, it does not make some of them fake.

He made 600 prints.

So who has the painting now? How come we haven't seen someone dissecting it? First thing I'd do.

Of course, the anonymous seller and anonymous buyer might both have been Banksy himself. Fantastic publicity for the cost of the commission.

Reports this morning indicate that after selling for a record 1.4 million dollars, a painting by underground artist Banksy “self-destructed” when a shredder concealed in the frame shredded the work in front of shocked auction patrons.

"It appears we just got Banksy-ed," Alex Branczik, Sotheby's senior director of contemporary art, said in the news release.

Banksy himself sent an instagram saying, “Going, going, gone.”

Aw, that's both terrible and hilarious at the same time.

Serves you right for spending ridiculous amounts of money on something like this.

And also, arrest this man!

Of course it is insured for theft or damage.

But still. They choose to guard their older art much more than they do the modern stuff. If that modern art would truly be on the same level as, say a work from Michelangelo, it would be guarded the same way as Michelangelo's.

But they don't. So you see their priorities very clearly.

Part of the value is age in relation to condition, literally no way a piece of equal artistic value would be as valuable as a very old piece.

You didn't think your statement through did you?

When the frame destroyed the painting it revealed a mirror behind it: you see, the real treasure was friendship all along. *saccarine music plays*

Woman to keep shredded Banksy Girl With Balloon painting

BBC News said:
A woman who bought a Banksy painting for more than £1m will keep the artwork, despite it self-destructing after it sold at auction...

Pest Control, a firm acting on behalf of the elusive artist, has titled the new piece "Love is in the Bin".

Sotheby's has confirmed the final price of £1,042,000 will be paid in full by the new owner.

The European woman who bought the piece, who does not want to be named, said: "At first I was shocked, but I realised I would end up with my own piece of art history."...

Alex Branczik, Sotheby's head of contemporary art, said the auction house was "pleased to confirm the sale of the artist's newly-titled Love is in the Bin, the first artwork in history to have been created live during an auction".

Love is in the Bin will be put on display to the public at Sotheby's New Bond Street galleries over the weekend.

The auction house has not revealed the identity of the new owner, saying only that she is a "long-standing client of Sotheby's".

The whole thing is an obvious wank. Credulous morons with too much money and an overly high opinion of themselves. **** off. Some people would buy a pile of feces smeared on a canvas and they would worship it as an insightful cutting edge commentry of humanity and the arts that makes you feel sooo much emotion if you snort some coke, shoot some heroin and squint at it with your head at a particular angle while you are ODing. Again. **** off.

This will be a huge headache for Sotheby's. I wonder if they will sue Banksy.

I doubt anyone will get sued.

I won't be opened up by the new owner - and maybe never. It would reduce its value and also against the wishes of the artist. But I wouldn't be surprised if it gets X-rayed. I also wouldn't be surprised if there are surprises inside.

It's interesting when you think that his video doesn't really show a functional shredder. I'm curious about what is really inside, but it won't be opened up.

Will the "clicker" ever show up?

Here is the original Sotheby's catalog listing for Lot 67.

Sotheby's said:
...Composed in spray paint and acrylic on canvas, the motif is based on an original graffiti mural first painted outside a Shoreditch shop in 2002 and then on London’s Southbank that same year, this time accompanied by the epitaph ‘There is Always Hope’. Bordered by an ornate gilded frame, an integral element of the artwork chosen by Banksy himself, the present work is a kitschy emblem of pathos. Instantly gettable, Banksy’s graffiti image is a perfect encapsulation of human emotion for the short-attention span of our social media age: it seditiously pokes fun at high-minded art world savoir faire and in doing so appeals to many, for whom it represents a contemporary expression of sanctity, a bright and vivid symbol of hope everlasting. Ultimately, however, Girl with Balloon is the poster-child of Banksy’s art: whether you are for or against him, this image utterly encapsulates the immediacy and controversy surrounding the artist’s mission...

proof that people will pay an exorbitant amount of money just to be spoon fed 98.75 percent pure ********.

Mr Inuit Eskimo sir, this finely ornated litre sized jug of crystal clear ice is 100% pure filtered beluga-narwhale urine composite that brings the drinker to mind of the cool refreshing winds of the South African desert alps in the spring. All yours for $150000 per gallon, it is a steal, especially as the prime artisan aqua vitae sourcer, wanksy has also pissed in it.
