New SCOTUS Judge II: The Wrath of Kavanaugh

[snipped more arguing about Ford vs Kavanaugh]
And again nothing about lying under oath for a SCOTUS position and displaying partisanship and poor temperament unbecoming any judge.

How about his emails?

Ex-Senate Aide: Kavanaugh Should Be Impeached for Lying Under Oath About Stolen Democratic Memos
Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont has suggested Kavanaugh lied to the Senate Judiciary Committee during his 2004 and 2006 hearings to become a federal judge. During those hearings Kavanaugh denied seeing private Democratic files that detailed strategies for opposing Republican judicial nominees while he was associate counsel in the George W. Bush White House. We speak with Lisa Graves, former top aide to Senator Patrick Leahy, whose new piece is headlined “I Wrote Some of the Stolen Memos That Brett Kavanaugh Lied to the Senate About.” Graves is the former chief counsel for nominations for the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and was deputy assistant attorney general in the Department of Justice. She is now co-director of Documented, which investigates corporate influence on democracy.

And those weren't all of the incriminating emails.

"As soon as the Dems take a majority back we're gonna...."

Do nothing. That's how that sentence ends. You're gonna do nothing. Because if you lock a Democrat in an empty room he's gonna find a way to get filibustered by his own necktie. If Congress all jumped out of a plane while Democrats where pushing "We need to find the ground" legislation, they would miss the ground.

There could be a 100% Democratic Senate, House, Presidency, SCOTUS, Every Governorship, Every State House Seat, Every State Senate Seat and the only Republican left in the county was a third assistant muskrat wrangler in Dishrag County, West Virginia and the Democrats would still find a way to be a milquetoast floor-mat to him while he walks all over them while he somehow passes more legislation then they do.

That's because all we know is love. We want them to love us even if we have to go all Che on their sorry unappreciative little asses! We have a hard time handling rejection!! It's OK, our therapists said that we are finally working it out.

I find that last bit funny considering how little the GOP congress is actually getting done these days. What has the GOP actually accomplished in the last two years? The passed a tax bill and...…?

A bunch of little stuff, by the look of it, and a bunch of undoing of Obama's legacy. The tax bill was the only "major" thing, not the only thing by far.

If you think it's bad he hired women, that's on you.

 Nothing in what he said would indicate that at all.

It's great when Pelosi talking about what she calls a "Republican" tactic gets snipped like that and advertised as her saying that that's the Democratic Agenda. It's a fine example of a Republican smear when even talking about what they're doing means that you get smeared.

If they aren't getting anything done what are we so afraid of? What disaster do we need a Blue Wave to save us from?

Or is this just the "As soon as we get in office..." but in the other direction? A list of catastrophes that will descend upon the Earth when the Republicans seize power... that never actually happen when they are in power and stay in a perpetual state of "any day now."

This question does have to be asked. The Republicans have owned the government for over two years now. Why aren't the gays in camps and abortions outlawed yet? Why is it always going to happen the next little bit of power they get?

Whether you're serious or not, laughter is probably the only appropriate answer to this, for very different reasons depending on which it is.

Woah, back up a second. What?

Torture, yes. Even the somewhat more benign of the programs is likely to lead to distinctly increased suicide rates, though. Rape is stretching it, though... but not as far as one might wish. As luchog mentioned, "corrective rape" is very much a thing, and even without it, the traumas caused by a number of the methods that tend to be used are very problematic.

The party that "freed the slaves" back in the time of Lincoln now views women as second class citizens. Pat yourself on the back.

"Now?"

That's... nothing short of monstrous.

Yeah. Conversion "therapy" was one of the things that I was actually scared of when I was under my parent's roof. There is no good conversion therapy.

In the worst-case scenario, the oceans will boil away.

And we definitely won't need to worry about it at that point.

Justice my ass. Why any sexual assault victim would ever come forward in light of the rafts of **** they have to take is beyond me. It's 2018. It's time to stop blaming victims. ****, who am I kidding.

Going by what she said, Ford was terrified and horrible things were already happening to her and her family (so much for the horror from the right about Kavanaugh's family as they summarily ignored the wrath that the right was inflicting on hers). She was stepping up reluctantly out of a sense of civic duty. A federal judge is an important position, yes, but far more bound to the law and nowhere near as important than a member of the Supreme Court. Further, Kavanaugh is heralded as something of a death knell to Roe v. Wade, which ups the ante significantly. On top of that, it looks quite a bit like somebody "outed" her to the press, pretty much forcing her to put up or shut up, with both being crappy options. It's actually not a surprise at all that she would speak out in such a situation and not speak out before, which makes the whole "why didn't she speak out sooner" foolishness really pathetic.

Ford seemed more credible to me. But even if you don't find her credible, he did get away with being a flailing partisan who lied to the senate and otherwise acted like an idiot. So there's that.

The partisanship and perjury should have been disqualifying. But then, his partisanship and willingness to engage in perjury both were plenty clear even before Ford entered the picture and the Republicans made it quite clear that they just didn't care about either. The partisanship probably made him more attractive for many of them, I'm guessing.

Either way, that he was accused by Ford and others was not disqualifying in my opinion. A mistake made while very drunk, in general, would be unlikely to be disqualifying. A pattern of long ago "mistakes" might be more problematic, of course, but would likely just need what actions were taken to prevent that from continuing addressed and an apology given and nearly no one would seriously care.

Okay I think Kavanaugh is guilty, but the attitude that if he wasn't he should be sacrificed to some greater cause victim emotional catharsis is sickening.

He's guilty because he's guilty, not guilty because we need a symbolic effigy to throw on the fire.

Of course. He's also not guilty just because Democrats largely really don't want him on the Supreme Court.

That's bull ****. If Kavanaugh has been falsely accused, then his accusers deserve no sympathy and Kavanaugh does. False accusers have no claim to any of the respect due to actual victims.

I'll agree with this sentiment. On the other hand, I think that Trump's apology was grandstanding ************, and done in incredibly poor taste. He has no standing to offer that "apology," regardless. And that's before getting to the lies that he mixed in.

Trump claims Kavanaugh was proven to be innocent -
a total lie.

Presumption of innocence. Everyone has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty.

Christine (two front doors) Ford was given an opportunity to present her case -- she didn't prove anything other than how easy it is to rake in $700,000.

I know it's convenient to have chronic amnesia on the subject, but:

The court of Public Opinion doesn't need to be (and never was) the same as a Criminal Court.

Job interviews aren't legal cases - the Republican Senate Advised and Consented to have an underage-drinker, perjuring hyper-partisan as a Supreme Court Justice.
Whatever he does is on the GOP and the President.

unless it's Hillary...
or black people....[/Republican]

Alright then, Kavanaugh passed the job interview and was hired -- public opinion prevailed.

Kavanaugh was nominated by a president who polled less votes than his electoral opponent; given the job by a majority of the Senate who collectively polled less votes that their Senate Democratic opponents, and all against public opinion that was against him by over 10 points - 41% for, 51% against

To be clear, Kavanaugh was the - most - unpopular - nominee - ever, by a long margin.

Some people have objected that that standard only applies in court, but I believe that is exactly backwards. It is applied in court because that is the standard by which all accusations should be judged. The accuser in any situation ought to be required to provide evidence in order to be believed. Even on these forums we are constantly seeing posters who demand that the person who puts forward a claim should put forward evidence supporting the claim. We are so familiar with the idea that it is frequently shortened to a single word, "Evidence?" An accusation is a claim, and should require evidence to be believed.

In other words, it's perfectly ok to hear Ms. Ford's claims and ask, "Evidence?"

Whatever he does is on the GOP and the President.
Very true. For good or ill. Someone will look back and say, "We told you so."
