You can't resist, can you? You can't actually engage in my argument without constructing the most ridiculous straw man ad hominem caricature of me you can think of. I clearly want rapists to get away with rape because I want allegations to be supported by actual evidence. I don't think there's a smilie strong enough to express my utter disdain at the complete lack of reason or reasonableness in your accusation. What a bitter, small, withered and resentful world you must inhabit.
I can take a woman's word that she absolutely knows who raped her, or attempted to rape her as, you know, EVIDENCE. I expressly WILL take her at her word,
1. When she has absolutely nothing to gain, and everything to lose by coming forward, especially when she is a successful, well paid, professional person who I consider to be of unimpeachable integrity.
2. When, under oath, she reaffirms that allegation, publicly, in a room full of nasty and hostile old white men, in front of millions of people watching live on TV, and does so with dignity and without anger or emotional ranting.
3. When, under oath, she does so, even after she and her family have received death-threats if she doesn't shut up.
4. When, under oath, in reply to direct questioning as to how sure she was of who attempted to rape her, she states "100 percent"!
Further,
I understand (and I hope that you do as well) that it is very common for people who suffer such physical, emotional and psychological trauma to be 100% sure on some important details, and yet be very sketchy on other, minor details. I understand this, because when I was about 15 or 16, at high-school, I got beaten up in a classroom by two older students. The reason that happened is because I refused to "hold" one of the students' drug stash in my school bag (so that he didn't get caught with it).
- I don't remember the details of the beating, except that it resulted in a cracked jaw, a black eye and broken ribs.
- I don't remember the exact year (1970 or 71 was most likely),
- I don't remember what time of year it was.
- I know it was a classroom but I couldn't tell you which one, or even which block it was in.
- I can't tell you exactly what I did in the hours before or after the beating
- I can't tell you how I got to school or home that day (on fine days I would bike, on rainy days I took the bus).
- I can't remember if there were others in the classroom.
BUT, I can sure as hell can tell you EXACTLY who the students were. Their names and what they looked like is burned into my brain such that I will never, ever forget - it was over 50 years ago but I will remember these two details until the day I die! This is one of the reasons it really pisses me of when people like you, and
TBD and
the prestige either mock or dismiss out-of hand, such claims because the claimant does not remember details surrounding their trauma. I think we can all relate to some personal traumatic experience in our past where some details are crystal clear, and other details are not.
I KNOW that the fact that Dr Ford cannot remember the exact time or place or many of the surrounding details is utterly irrelevant to the veracity and truthfulness of her claims, and that this is perfectly normal.
Also, I understand (and I hope that you do as well) that it is very common for victims of sexual abuse and other physical, emotional and psychological trauma, to not report what happened to them to anyone else; sometimes until years later, in many cases, never. Between a quarter and a third of rapes go totally unreported. The figure is even lower for sexual assault and attempted rape... less than 10% are reported. I never reported what happened to me, and I refused to tell my parents who did it (for fear of getting another beating from those two students).
Think about this for a moment. Add up all the women in your life; all the women you know or encounter on a daily basis; your doctor's receptionist, the checkout girls at the local supermarket, your next door neighbour, your daughter, your wife, your sister, your extended family, the families of people you associate with, your children's school teachers, your work colleagues or employees, your customers, or the customers/clients where you work, all the girls you knew at school, high school, college/university....pull out all your class photos and look at them - count up all the girls in them. (for me, this total exercise came to almost 500 women) NOW understand this... depending on your total, about five of them will have been the victims of at least sexual assault, and of those five, three or four of them will have never reported it to an authority of any kind. These are people YOU knew, or know, however peripherally that might be. Its a sobering thought, isn't it?
