That's not the real reason you shortened the quote. You did that to make Kavanaugh look better, even if it meant inaccurately reporting the accusation.

Really? It's not at all uncommon usage. In some forum software that's how you markup bold text. It's even in the wikipedia article for asterisk.
 
Police report says they questioned Kav in connection with the bar fight his buddy has described.
NEW HAVEN — As an undergraduate student at Yale, Brett M. Kavanaugh was involved in an altercation at a local bar during which he was accused of throwing ice on another patron, according to a police report.

The incident, which occurred in September 1985 during Mr. Kavanaugh’s junior year, resulted in Mr. Kavanaugh and four other men being questioned by the New Haven Police Department. Mr. Kavanaugh was not arrested, but the police report stated that a 21-year-old man accused Mr. Kavanaugh of throwing ice on him “for some unknown reason.”

Kav started lining up support to fight the allegations against him before they were made public.

Kerry Berchem, who was at Yale with both Kavanaugh and his accuser, Deborah Ramirez, has tried to get those messages to the FBI for its newly reopened investigation into the matter but says she has yet to be contacted by the bureau.

That's to suggest a footnote. As I said, I participate in a lot of forums and that is a new one. I can easily see how TBD might look at them the way you used them as sort of a substitution for quotation marks.

I just read the Wikipedia entry for 'asterisk'. And you are right. It is used for emphasis. That is during the Middle Ages.

I don't do Twitter, so maybe that's why I have never seen it. We have a bold, italics and highlight buttons as do pretty much every forum I frequent.

That said, I can easily see how i or others might have missed that usage.

That's true, but why would phunk use asterisks and not just use quotes if he was quoting something? The fact he didn't use quotes indicates he wasn't quoting anything.

I've often used quotes as emphasis for say a word or a phrase or a title of a movie or book.

My point simply was one of ignorance of that usage. This all doesn't really matter and is a derail.

That's not fair. While Kav demonstrated during the hearing that he is arrogant, we do not know if he is a drunk. No evidence has been presented that he drinks more than what is considered socially acceptable now.
