Cont: The Trump Presidency IX: Nein, Nein!

So China's retaliation is smaller, as expected, but also lower than expected:

China has hit back at President Donald Trump by imposing new trade tariffs on $60bn of American goods.

...

The Chinese commerce ministry said it would impose its tariffs from 24 September - the date the US duties come into effect - but at lower rates than previously expected.

It will place an additional 5% in duty on US products including smaller aircraft, computers and textiles, and an extra 10% on goods such as chemicals, meat, wheat and wine.

Linky.

Will we see the automatic additional tariffs in response? I'm thinking no before further talks. China is out of things to tariff at this point, so they'd be looking at more punitive actions.

For fun, here's an attempt to quantitatively measure the strength of Trump's reality distortion field. The GW report that gave 3,000 deaths came out in the end of August. In May, Harvard gave a midpoint of around 4,000. I found two surveys from YouGov, one from June 3-5, 2018 and one from September 14, 2018. The wording is slightly different.

June 3-5, 2018

Which statement is closer to the truth?

|Total|Dem|Ind|Rep
More than 4000 people died as a result of Hurricane Maria|40%|54%|36%|29%
Around 100 people died as a result of Hurricane Maria|17%|12%|17%|23%
Not sure|43%|34%|47%|48%

September 14, 2018

Following a study, the Puerto Rican government reported that the official death toll from Hurricane Maria is 2,975 people. President Trump recently tweeted that "3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico." He did not offer any evidence that the official figure was incorrect. Which statement do you think is closer to the truth?

|Total|Dem|Ind|Rep
Nearly 3,000 people died as a result of Hurricane Maria|44%|82%|35%|21%
Much fewer than 3,000 people died as a result of Hurricane Maria|25%|5%|24%|47%
Not sure|31%|13%|41%|33%

(They gave it without the cue and received similar results.)

Approximate changes:

|Total|Dem|Ind|Rep
3000/4000 dead|+4%|+28%|-1%|-8%
Much fewer/100 dead|+8%|-7%|+7%|+24%
Not sure|-12%|-21%|-6%|-15%
Without the table format working (at least for me in Tapa) I feared I would miss the payoff.
Nope, spotted it near the end... "+24%". :(

On a happier note (damn, i need one), I'll give a shout out/callback to our poster whose name I can't recall (Tapa again; search function sucks) who, inspired by Trump's poorly worded tweet asked... "Did Trump just admit to killing 2950 Puerto Ricans?" :D

I think it's a shot across the bow to make Trump think twice. If it fails, there will be more to follow.

Oh, hell. What kind of stupid **** is he up to now?

I wonder if the deteriorating mental health of our POTUS would constitute a biological threat?

Funny news on the refugee front:

Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) on Tuesday went after the Trump administration for its failure to consult with Congress before proposing to slash the number of refugees the U.S. will accept next year.

Grassley, who’s chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the administration has a legal obligation to seek counsel from Congress before proposing new caps on refugees. If Trump officials don’t oblige, he warned, Congress will act to force their hand.

Does he ever manage to send a link to anything he's talking about, other than possibly a Fox News segment?

(I'll just ignore the "first time" part, which I already know is a lie.)

Just wait until he imposes tarfis on iPhones, that will be the end of his political life. Lock children up, lie about everything that can be forgiven but get between the public and their latest iPhone....

At the moment, they're going to be exempt from these tariffs. Several Apple products are specifically exempt, and the White House told Apple that iPhones would be exempt as well. Of course, that requires trusting statements from the White House.

The U.S. government issued a final list of the products that will be affected by the new tariffs. Among products missing from the list are the Apple Watch and AirPods, along with smart watches and fitness trackers made by other companies such as Fitbit. The exemptions were first reported earlier Monday by Bloomberg.

[Apple CEO Tim] Cook also visited the White House in May to discuss his concerns, when administration officials reportedly assured him that new tariffs would not affect the iPhone.

I wonder what fully unbiased, non-partisan set of guidelines they use to determine which specific companies will be protected from the effects of their new tariffs?

I wonder what will happen at Wal-Mart and Harbor Freight? I buy lots of cheap tools at Harbor Freight. Tools I simply couldn't afford before. Most aren't great tools but most are good enough for as much as I use them. It's one thing to buy a tool for say $10 that you might use once, it's another to buy that same tool for $35.

The funny thing about Trump's tariffs is it is the one place I think Trump has his heart in the right place. But unfortunately his head isn't. His decisions on what tariff seems arbitrary to virtually everyone. No one trusts him. Midwest farm states are getting hit hard by this. Trump by himself could make Iowa, Nebraska, Indiana go blue all on his own.

They're giving farmers something like $12 billion in additional subsidy money though, so that should buy some good will from voters in those states even if the tariffs hit them pretty hard.
