I just finished Fear the new Woodward book. It's not an exaggeration to say that there's been an administrative coup in the Whitehouse. There's the president and the administration and the administration is, with a couple of exceptions working against the president. Given that the president is not just clearly incapable of governing, he is clearly incapable of understanding the issues he needs to make decisions about, the administration really doesn't have a choice; they have to subvert the president.

That was the first thing I noticed, but it looks like a quote and not a trump error. Unless it's a trump error in replicating the quote.

eta: I have checked Peter Morici's twitter account and can't find that quote, so it's possible/likely trump was repeating something he heard on Fox.

My feelings go back and forth on this. That sucks to see in a democracy. However, nothing about the office exempts it from the social science of management.

That's exactly it. It's only the same coup that all administrations everywhere suffer, to some extent. Personal pocket vetoes, foot dragging, psychological manipulation, managing your boss. Only in Trump's case, there is no detectable brain wave, so it's a "barely" functional zombie with Turing Test Tweets.

Would it help though? The people Trumpism has driven out of congress are not exactly standing up to him.

Yep and standing up to assylum seekers is part of it. That proud moment when FDR stood up to Hitler and said "No we will not take your jews, they are your problem and you have to find your own solution to it" That is a proud moment for the rule of law.

They do have a choice - invoke the 25th Amendment, or quit.

Change the law then, or engage in civil disobedience and accept the punishment the law defines. How else can it work?

It might be argued that incumbents have an advantage when it comes to re-election, and thus a vested interest in not 'rocking the boat', and thus will be less likely to provide any sort of balance to a president who has gone off the deep end. With term limits, you will constantly be bringing in new people; if you don't have an incumbent hanging around, you'll get more turnover and more upsets, resulting in more challenge to presidential authority.

That's a theory anyways.

I was assuming that they cared about democracy. There are many choices they can make if we take away the stipulation that they care about how the system is supposed to work, up to and including shooting Trump.
