Wow! Conservative elites, in my view, probably have little vested interest in democracy as a political concept. I'd like to hear more from you about how they can fix our broken system. No, seriously, what is your evidence for that statement.

change has to come from within, maybe through a generational change.

mind you, I'm not holding my breath. It might take the redistricting from the 2020 or 2030 census to make the GOP hit rock bottom and lose their donors because they can't get into power anymore.

Nah, I'm pretty sure Paul's always been against narcissistic demagogues. You're only noticing this now?

As everyone knows, Paul's songs always contain a hidden message that can only be heard when played backwards: "Make America Great Again" and "Re-elect Trump." Which is amazingly prophetic, considering Paul died in 1966.

I seem to recall Charlie Manson having a similar delusion.

Good Luck with that!

All law is predicated upon the notion that there is a non-subjective morality which exists.

Not really. It is predicated on the notion that there is a collectively-agreed morality which exists. It doesn't require it to be written down in the laws of physics.

Regardless, that's besides the point. The point is that calling a law unjust and ignoring it doesn't do much unless you can get the law changed. Otherwise you're just ignoring laws that don't suit you, and that opens a pandora's box where your 'foes' can do the same (just as you can abuse legal means, and they can too). That's really the only point I was making.

I can give you examples. You do know that empiricism does not require you have the formulae to describe an observation for that observation to exist.

Yes. I was being hyperbolic.

The Fugitive Slave Act was objectively unjust by the standards of those who enacted them. Being able to deprive citizens of other states of life, liberty, and property without due process of law not only violates the basic legal principles of the society that created them, it violates it's own internal justification of enforcing a state's right to internal governance.

Specific examples aside, it's not unjust if you live in a society where some group is considered sub-human. It's abhorrent to us, sure, but it's not objectively unjust. It really depends on what we see as "just".

It doesn't take magical thinking to view some tenants of justice as universal, basically constituting the very idea of 'justice'.

How can they be universal when many don't hold them? You could say they were universal if virtually every human had them, but it still wouldn't be objective. Universal is a better term for this.

Do you understand my screen name?

No, actually. What does it mean?

You've been gone a while.

Just a few months!

There have been several threads talking about this very issue and I am one who believes that there can be axioms of human behavior similar to the regular, scientific concept of 'axiom.' Has nothing at all to do with deities or magical thinking; just observation and extrapolation like everything else in science.

Yes, this makes sense. I was addressing the idea that value judgments can be 'objective', which has a specific meaning. I didn't mean to derail the thread, but as usual these conversations tend to get out of hand.

Sorry about that.

And by "fixed", he meant "rigged", as in "the fix is in".

"While my (our) poll numbers are good"

"Among people who love me, I poll great!"

with the Economy being the best ever

Everything has to be the most X ever with this idiot.

Wow. A Greatest Hits tweet.

Cracks are showing out there in the base:

Column: The casualties of Trump's trade war are mounting

“This is a really big deal for us,” Elkhart County Commissioner Mike Yoder, a Republican, told The New York Times. “We export a lot of product and import a lot of product. If this whole trade dispute expands much more, it has serious implications, and we will once again lead the country into a recession, without a doubt.”

"When President Obama said that he has been to “57 States,” very little mention in Fake News Media. Can you imagine if I said that...story of the year! "

No mention of the flip yet.

In contrast to a lot of the crap Trump has spewed forth, this would be fairly accurate. I mean 57 is kind of close to 50. I, for one, would give him a pat on the back.
Kind of like when you played Little League and the kid that always strikes out gets on base due to an error. "Alright, way to go Timmy." Of course, Timmy gets put out on the next play because he forgets to run to second.

The thing is, it was obvious what Obama meant. He said he'd been to 57 states, said there were two he couldn't go to, and that he had one left to go. Fairly easy to see that he misspoke and said "57", rather than "47". And then later that day, completely unprompted (i.e. not in answer to a question) he said publicly that he had some important figures to get right and that he hoped he did because he had made a mistake earlier that day.

That's why it wasn't a big story - he made an honest, easy mistake, and immediately owned up to the fact that he had made a mistake.

Compare and contrast with "covfefe", where Trump had to get someone to announce on his behalf that it wasn't a mistake that anybody could have made but a super-special secret code. And Trump wonders why people laugh at him.

It looks like the sort of evidence it would take to persuade you is an impossible standard to meet, which is fine. Either way, now you know of the multiple, independent lines of converging evidence upon which I base my opinion that "I think Dems are handling the socialism thing just fine. The GOP shot itself in the foot with the "OMG socialism!" fearmongering during the Obama years. Such charges are somewhere between "powerless" and "kind of helpful" now at this point."

You know, at that time I was telling my fellow right wing loons that such a strategy would not end well. It's not hard to see "the boy that cried wolf" scenario manifesting itself if you simply bother to look and think.

Is this part of the joke? The walrus thing and all that?
