Cont: The Trump Presidency IX: Nein, Nein!

Nothing he does surprises me any more. SAD!

Morelike... that's just par for the course, not some new depth of pettiness.

I wonder how Trump will be remembered when he dies? What will reactions be?
I hope he receives nothing better than the "condolences to family", "hearts and prayers" crap just like he gave McCain. Personally, I'll say "Good riddance. The air won't smell so foul now".

Depends on which faction is in question. Some will be in awe of his amazing accomplishments, regardless.

Trump's a con, plus he believes he's the greatest POTUS ever.

He thinks he made the economy great. In reality, the economy had recovered nicely under Obama and the tax cuts to the rich added a stimulus to an economy that didn't need one.

Just like Reagan and GW, pretend the deficit matters when the Democrats control the budget, until you want to give yourself and your rich cronies a bigger tax cut, then stop mentioning the deficit and take credit for the results of the hidden-in-plain-sight stimulus by calling it a tax cut instead of a deficit spending boost.

Of course the economy is doing well, the bill comes later.

Trump tells his adoring masses. They think surely their wages will go up soon, look how well the economy is and they believe Trump is doing a great job.

Is it worth mentioning that my Republican father and a friend of mine who's Republican think that he's trying to keep his promises and that that alone would be enough to make him a pretty great President, before getting to all the rest of the great things about him?

A question from the distance:
How Trump is possible? Are Americans like him?

A clarification:
I ask this without any hint of anti-Americanism. The model “Trump” is only American in the surface. The world is full of terrible politicians. Less “brilliant”, sure. But the surface is also the message.

More than probably any other country, the USA has a diverse bunch of people, but idiotic, unethical, entitled kids of smart, rich, unethical fathers are something that can likely be found in any country. As for Trump... he was made possible by, more than anything else, the rich people and extremists who have been acting to corrupt and brainwash the Republican party and its base for many decades now, step by step. More recently, they started tapping even more directly into the darker side of the human heart to try to motivate their voters to vote... and it worked so well that it very quickly started snowballing. Trump managed to capitalize on that, and now we've got him, in short. There's a lot more that can be said, but that's probably the single biggest factor of importance.

Close the coalhouse door, lad. There's blood inside,
Blood from broken hands and feet,
Blood that's dried on blackened meat,
Blood from hearts that know no beat.
Close the coalhouse door, lad. There's blood inside.

Close the coalhouse door, lad. There's bones inside,
Mangled, broken piles of bones,
Buried 'neath a mile of stones,
And there's no-one there to hear the moans.
Close the coalhouse door, lad. There's bones inside.

Close the coalhouse door, lad. There's bairns inside,
Bairns that had no time to hide,
Bairns who saw the blackness slide,
Oh, there's bairns beneath the mountainside.
Close the coalhouse door, lad. There's bairns inside.

Close the coalhouse door, lad, and stay outside.
For Geordie's standin' on the dole
While Mrs Jackson, like a fool,
Complains about the price of coal.
Close the coalhouse door, lad, and stay outside.

A question from the distance:
How Trump is possible?

My two cents (feel free to pay more):

Simple answer: Self-help books
Since in the US "success" is generally clearly defined as "having visibly more than others", the ostentation of Trump is seen, at first approximation, as something to aspire to.
Plenty of people still want to believe in The American Dream, but since so few achieve it, the conclusion many draw is that there is a shortcut, an insider tip, a secret handshake that will get you to the Top that is known only to the 1%ers. So instead of building a career, some think it more clever to read all available self-help books, pay for Wealth Seminars and watch weird Investor programs.
Trump has seemingly not only reached the top (he is described as "a poor man's idea of a rich man"), but he spend a good part of his public life pretending to offer a way to join him there: become His Apprentice, and you will become as rich as him. Read The Art of the Deal, and you will become rich as him etc. etc.
For his candidacy, he went even a step further: you only have to Vote for him, and you will become as rich as him - reason being that the other 1%ers have conspired with immigrants to keep his voter pool poor, but Trump can change that with a snap of his finger. This, of course, is 100% aligned with the Prosperity Gospel version of Christianity in the US.
In short: President Trump was considered that the ultimate shortcut to prosperity

Are Americans like him?

No.
Especially his utter lack of loyalty to those who work for him is actually very alien to virtually all Americans I know, regardless of political affiliation.

Trump will be the first president whose name is taken off buildings. No library, but a bunch of shrines in Branson, Vegas etc where he will be represented by wax dummies.

Not really. He was born there.

correct.
But his mythos is that he only got a small loan from his dad and is otherwise a self-made man and so can YOU.

Trump, when see without the propaganda, is in truth the greatest counter-example for The American Dream.

Some, about the same fringe minority as exists anywhere.

Trump's success boils down to simple populism. He promised easy, impossible solutions while everyone else offered small increments to the status quo. All your needs could be met by him "being tough" with some unspecified someone, who changed often enough that people found something that resonated: China, Mexico, minorities, whatever, and that would make it all better, trust him, it'll be yuge. He was enough of a bully that bullies saw themselves in him, but soft enough around the edges that non-bullies excused it thinking they could give him a chance.

There's an element of tribalism there too. 40% of our country would support a moldy ham sandwich in office if it had an (R) next to the name. I'm being literal here: an actual sandwich as president. Maybe they'd convince themselves the office should be empty, or that they're making some kind of political statement, it doesn't matter what it would take so long as it's their moldy sandwich.

We had a saying here, after WW2, as a guard against a future rise of fascism: "It could happen here." Well, this is it. It's happening right now.

"Just watched former Intelligence Official Phillip Mudd become totally unglued and weird while debating wonderful @PARISDENNARD over Brennan’s Security Clearance. Dennard destroyed him but Mudd is in no mental condition to have such a Clearance. Should be REVOKED?"

Trump Applauded CNN Analyst Paris Dennard; Now He’s Suspended From The Network
"After Trump applauds the pro-Trump commentator via Twitter, the left-leaning Washington Post conducts an investigation into Dennard and publishes a hit piece using allegations from nearly four years ago. The allegations are nearly four years old, so why would the liberal paper feel the need to run a piece on it now? Because they often go after anyone who supports the president, and now Dennard has been suspended by CNN for claims that allegedly occurred years ago."

Assuming the worst about WP: how is that different from Trump suspending contact with the not-Fox media?
(except the obvious that private media companies aren't elected and aren't supposed to work for the well-being of all Americans?)

So Mr Arrows, can we assume you will be out campaigning for Al Franken to get his seat back? Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander as they say.

Suspended pending further investigation.

The Post reported that Dennard was fired from a job at Arizona State University "for making sexually explicit comments and gestures toward women."

The Post obtained a copy of an ASU report that described the university's 2014 internal investigation into Dennard's conduct. According to the newspaper, the report "describes a series of inappropriate incidents often initiated by Dennard with the two women in 2013 and 2014."

Suspended because Trump applauded him. *********.

I keep wondering how Republicans will treat him once he’s out of office. I imagine it’ll be like seeing that one person you really regret dating for way too long.

“Ugh. There’s Trump. Just don’t make eye contact and maybe we can pretend we didn’t see him. No. Oh, no. He’s coming this way. Okay, be polite and find an excuse to get out of here as quickly as possible.”

It does seem like a lot of people who support him do so

a. because they have to everything he does and sink to his level for political/career reasons, or

b. dislike him as much as the liberals do, but hold onto him in the hope that he will fix the economy or whatever.

So I think he will lose a lot of supporters once he's no longer El Presidente.

Then again, you also have the edgy ones who rejoice every time he does something terrible because he sees him as their personal troll/wrecking ball against "the establishment". They may remember him fondly.

Humorist Fran Lebowitz long ago said that "Trump is a poor person's idea of a rich person."
