That element of the GOP was used against him in his 2000 presidential bid when the Bush campaign ran a despicable push poll to hurt him in South Carolina. He was campaigning with his adopted daughter from Bangladesh when voters were asked, "Would you be more or less likely to vote for John McCain…if you knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child?"
The sad part is seeing people sharing the video of him defending Obama from a racist attack during the 2008 campaign and realizing the wing of party represented by the lady in the red sweater he's admonishing ultimately won out.
Ultimately won out.
I like to think that by revealing their racist bigotry so clearly, and by hoisting to power a veritable caricature of backwardness, sensible people will quash the aspirations of those despicable deplorables.
So that ultimately progress and sanity move us ever forward.
