I don't see why that would be breaking the law, unless it was untrue in which case she could be sued for liable. But IMO you're missing the key point. The news media makes it open to everyone, so its value is diminished. Offering something directly to the campaigners (and no one else) means you are willing to negotiate in exchange for valuable information.

You may want to take it up with acby who seems to take the position that the ex lover violates election law.... foreign national giving something valuable to a campaign with intent to affect the election.

Zig would argue it seems that it would get thrown out eventually on first amendment grounds.

Trump Tweets

".@JudgeJeanine “Bob Mueller, isn’t your whole investigation premised on a Fake Dossier, paid for by Hillary, created by a man who hates Donald Trump, & used to con a FISA Court Judge. Bob, I really think it’s time for you to give up your phony investigation.” No Collusion!"

".@GovMikeHuckabee “Your paycheck is bigger, your pension is stronger.” @foxandfriends Unemployment numbers are better than they have been in 50 years, & perhaps ever. Our country is booming like never before - and it will get even better! Many companies moving back to the U.S.A."

Trump tweets

"“Seems like the Department of Justice (and FBI) had a program to keep Donald Trump from becoming President”. @DarrellIssa @foxandfriends If this had happened to the other side, everybody involved would be in jail. This is a Media coverup of the biggest story of our time."

Talking about the size of his knob during his election campaign would be a good example, for a prosecutor if they wanted to establish Trump's lack of ability to be be embarrassed.

BS. He says he's got a big one, and has "nothing" to be embarrassed about down there.

It's against the law for a foreign national to make a contribution to any candidate in any US election. Regardless of the relationship. That doesn't mean a foreign national lover couldn't give a person who happens to be candidate a personal present. The litmus test would be what is the purpose of the gift.

To clarify, it was an ex lover getting revenge by going to the other campaign and dishing.

That absolutely could be construed as an illegal contribution. But it also could be seen as simply an ex lover sticking it to her ex. It's far more troubling that she went to the opposing campaign as opposed to a media outlet. My gut is that a prosecutor would not be inclined to bring charges on that though. You could argue that in reality it was a personal gift of a kind.

Help me understand.

"Trump conspired with the Russians to steal the election,"

Has been downgraded to...

"Trump accepted election influence as an illegal campaign contribution,"

Has been downgraded to...

"Trump considered an illegal campaign contribution but rejected the offer."

And that's the crime?

The crime was the hacking of the DNC and some state election systems. There may be additional crimes, which is what Mueller is investigating.

Is there no boundaries for your absurd obfuscation?

None of this is true. There is NO EVIDENCE that they turned down anything. We have no idea that there wasn't dozens or hundreds of further communications and coordinated acts between the players involved.

The point is the moment you show up to a meeting to discuss the receipt of valuable information you've committed conspiracy. PERIOD.

One defense they could proffer is that there exists sensitive russian documents from a Russian official that are legal to receive and they thought they were those.

So, take the ex lover example. If that case would not be illegal, then what if she told her embassy instead? And a person there wrote it down. And then the ambassador decided to give it. Those would be sensitive documents from an official. But is the former legal and the latter not?
