I agree, he absolutely must believe he's going to get a pardon. That somehow Donald is going to save him.

Both the tax evasion and bank fraud are beyond obvious. One of the accountants admitted helping him provide phony documents to secure the bank loans.

Pardoning Manafort would be incredibly harmful to any other president but we are talking Trump here. His supporters would accept anything he does. And Trump knows it as he so clearly pointed out with his "I could shoot someone" declaration.

I truly do think his base is becoming, if not already has become, a cult.

I think Trump will pardon him before leaving office. At least he's broke and will stay that way for a while. I don't think he can get away with this again, he'll be closely watched.

If he really is stupid enough (and he has given us no reason to think he's not) to pardon Manafort during this term, I think his base will accept it.

I think Trump will have to pardon Manafort pretty quickly. Otherwise, what message is being sent to anyone else that the Feds might be pressuring?

Manafort is facing many decades/life in prison. He may be betting that he'll only have to spend a couple years in prison if Trump is not re-elected and a max of 6 years if he is re-elected.

trump Tweets

"Fake News reporting, a complete fabrication, that I am concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower. This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics - and it went nowhere. I did not know about it!"

OMG how stupid are these people? He just admitted that his son met with representatives of a foreign Government in the hopes of getting information on his opponent. That's Attempted Collusion even if it didn't go anywhere!

Legally, it's probably Conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud United States which can be a felony of up to five years in jail.

It's also likely conspiracy to commit election funding fraud, specifically

Section 319 of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971
(2 U.S.C. 441e) is amended—
(1) by striking the heading and inserting the following:
‘‘CONTRIBUTIONS AND DONATIONS BY FOREIGN NATIONALS’’; and
(2) by striking subsection (a) and inserting the following:
‘‘(a) PROHIBITION.—It shall be unlawful for—
‘‘(1) a foreign national, directly or indirectly, to make—
‘‘(A) a contribution or donation of money or other thing
of value, or to make an express or implied promise to
make a contribution or donation, in connection with a
Federal, State, or local election;
‘‘(B) a contribution or donation to a committee of a
political party; or
‘‘(C) an expenditure, independent expenditure, or
disbursement for an electioneering communication (within
the meaning of section 304(f)(3)); or
‘‘(2) a person to solicit, accept, or receive a contribution
or donation described in subparagraph (A) or (B) of paragraph
(1) from a foreign national.’’

and then we have the question of the Logon act which states...

Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

Which would certainly come into play if, as believed, sanctions on Russia were discussed in return for political information.

OMG how stupid are these people? ....
If you listen to Hannity, Trump will make more sense. They believe the horse **** they are selling.

Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Giuliani all have been spouting the fantasy that collusion is not a crime, even though it is, it's just called something else. They've been repeating frequently that getting opposition research on one's opponent isn't a crime, even though getting it from the Russians is.

And Trump just thinks what they are saying is true.

OMG how stupid are these people?

The people that believe this nonsense only want their beliefs confirmed and they are getting it from FOX and Trump. They have lost all desire to use any critical thinking and have gone for the simple "See? I knew it!" option. And that is very, very stupid.

No, its not even "attempted". "And it went nowhere" is irrelevant.

A conspiracy to commit an illegal act does not require that act to be successful for it to be a crime. If another person and I conspire to assassinate a politician, but we fail in that attempt for any reason, whether that reason is inside or outside our control, we have both still committed the crime of conspiracy.

Manafort is an idiot for not making a deal with Mueller. His guilt is more than obvious. The only thing I can think of for his failing to make a deal is he thinks Trump will pardon him. Only a fool would pardon Manafort but we are talking about Trump here. And tax evasion by the rich is something Trump has no problem with.
I'd say he has people that he fears more than going to prison if he talks. Novichok anyone?

I truly believe that if an attorney who represents himself as a client is a fool (according to the old adage), they're going to have to come up with a whole new vocabulary to describe "a client who accepts Rudy Giuliani as an attorney".

They've got all the troops lined up to try to sell this crap and the only people buying are best associated with that phrase about shooting someone on Fifth Avenue.

Out of deference, various sources referred to collusion because it sounds so much more user friendly than "cheating lying conspiring traitorous son of a bitch". Now they're going Early Truther on us... "See??!! See??!! It doesn't say "collusion" is a crime. Rudy was right!"

No. It says a whole lot of other things are a crime and those can conveniently be lumped into "collusion", a word in the English language that's being used to encompass the entire series of misadventures and lies.

Can we look forward to Giuliani laying more groundwork for their next counter-salvo. "Well, see, that's what I said. Yeah, junior got a bag full of diamonds and the entire Wishy Washy Voters of Michigan database, but that's accepting a bribe and receiving stolen property, not collusion!"

Glad to see you agree with the POTUS that there was no collusion and anyway collusion isn't illegal!

… and he didn't know anything about it (just in case it is).

No longer. It's now "I knew about it! So what! Kiss my ass!" And the response from all the people who backed his lie for 14 months? Why, they're outraged, turning against him, resigning their posts and turning over tapes and photos to the press. Ha! Who am I kidding. The reaction from his past and present toadies is "Should I use Chapstick or Revlon Midnight Cerise?"

I would like to see one of our resident "conservatives" take a stance against what Trump is doing. That would go a long way towards convincing me that not all "conservatives" are complicit in this treason.

I would also like a million dollars and a vacation on the moon.

But they don't care what Trump is doing.

But they don't care what Trump is doing.

I'm talking about the hypothetical "conservatives" who actually care about democracy and the law. Maybe they don't exist on this forum. Maybe they don't exist at all. Who knows?
