Ikea apologises after child shoots gun found inside couch in Indiana store

A six-year-old has fired a gun in an Ikea store in Indiana after finding a firearm that fell from a customer's pocket onto a couch, police say.

A man accidentally dropped the gun while sitting down to test a couch in the store and did not realise it was missing when he sat up again, police told local media.

The child found the gun a few minutes later and fired it into the couch cushions.

The gun owner, who continued browsing the store after dropping the gun, reportedly only noticed it was missing when he heard gunfire.

No-one was hurt in the incident and no-one has been arrested, police said.

"As soon as he realised there was a commotion in the store, the gun-owner quickly identified himself … and fully co-operated with the investigation," Sergeant Tom Weger, from Fishers Police Department, Indiana, told The Washington Post.

Police in Fishers, Indiana, used the incident to remind gun owners to be responsible.

"It's important to remember that if you are going to carry a firearm on your person, that you make sure you're under control of it at all times," Sergeant Weger told local broadcaster WTTV.

Very glad this incident turned out well.

Doesn't the gun owner at least get a ticking off for being irresponsible?
Maybe some retraining?

Or at the very least forced to buy anything the bullet broke? Infact why is Ikea apologising publically? He should be the one saying sorry. The softly softly approach to gun stupidity and irresponsibility is mind boggling.

Is there to be any action taken against the gun owner?

In the UK if a child got hold of a gun under any circumstances, the gun owner would at a minimum have their gun seized lose their licence, for life. The most relevant charge would be culpable and reckless conduct.

Maybe if the other furniture had been armed then maybe the sofa wouldn't have been shot

edited to add....

then again, so much more furniture ends up in swimming pools..

To be fair, I am amazed what I find in my sofa cushions.
For all I know, there might be a claymore mine in there...

One of my exes 1) had two autistic little boys, and 2) insisted on keeping a loaded and unsecured handgun around the house. One day her eldest (likewise at age 6) got ahold of said firearm. No injuries incurred, but to this day makes me cringe in thought.

This is why I don't own a gun at all, despite being a right wing loon.

Why is Ikea apologising, rather than banning and/or suing the negligent gun owner?

This. Ikea should not be apologizing for anything. They did nothing wrong.

They need to sue the gun owner for damages. The gun owner needs to face legal repercussions as well, even if it is just a fine in civil court.

The obvious solution is to arm all of the Ikea employees with guns.

That way when a gun-toting sofa goes on a shooting rampage, then the armed Ikea employees can shoot the offending sofa.

How many would die while they were assembling the gun?

Sadly, probably not.

There are very few repercussions for negligence re: firearms. Even that FBI agent who accidentally shot someone while dancing will probably "only" get fired, and maybe not even that.

I'm a supporter of gun rights, but with gun rights come gun responsibilities, and we need to treat negligence as more than just an "oopsie."

They'd all be shooting through cushions. A silent firefight!
