The Trump Presidency VII

Seriously though, if you could give Trump his wall ($20+billion) and get DACA and some pathway to quasi-citizenship for everyone else here illegally, wouldn't you do it? That was the gist of Andrew Sullivan's latest piece in New Yorker. Worth a read.
I don't think so. I don't think the wall is good for those on the border. I think it's an injustice to them.

And I'll tell you exactly what would obviously happen, if democrats followed this advice:

Cheeto Benito would ratchet up* his demonization of naturalized citizens, and nonwhite people who are citizens by birthright, and continue to demonize "illegals" when he could.

*: I'm specifically not suggesting that he would "begin" doing this - he started down that path decades ago.

A couple of problems...

First of all, the initial problems of the wall (the huge cost and ineffectiveness, the we environmental costs) are still there.

Secondly it would require that you trust trump and/or the Republicans in Congress. You may find you agree to fund the walk in exchange for DACA, only to find trump goes back on his word and cancels DACA after he has got his wall funding.

Not surprising, since they are a bunch of bigoted, racist, idiots.

To be fair, I've seen nonracist people do this on occasion as well, thopugh not nearly as much as the guys who drove, say, Pizzagate (or any of the social media "-gate" outbursts disguised as scandals).

The Wall(tm) is terrible. Its absolutely abhorrent, for many reasons. My biggest problem is that building the wall would be enabling a racist as a matter of national policy. But if you told me that we could bring 12 million out of the shadows and give 8 million more citizenship... you have to admit that would be hard to pass up. Not that that kind of deal will ever happen.

The kind of deal I'm talking about is predicated on basic trust between both parties. If that's gone, we're really in trouble.

Well I think any trust people may have had in trump and the Republicans died years ago.

Killed by:
Dozens of lawsuits against trump for failure to pay contractors

Republican dirty tricks over supreme Court nominations

Trump saying he wants a 'clean' DACA bill then shooting down any proposals

The promise to fellow Republican Collins to bring in a bill to fund health care that never happened

Now you're starting to figure it out.

Yes, we are, in fact, really in trouble. Now what?

With Trump, there is no give-and-take: he has demonstrated time and again that a win for him must be a lose for the other side or it doesn't count.
The Dems mustn't give him an inch unless they get way more than they have to give up.

Trump promised that Mexico would pay for the wall.

I'd like to hear any supporter defend the attempts to get congress to put up the money (much less to rip families apart as negotiational hostages)

Of course, the answer is they knew he was ********ting and didn't care.

You were supposed to take him seriously not literally. The wall was just a metaphor anyway.

There are court orders preventing the termination of DACA right now. Let's what and see what happens in November. Dems could tie a DACA fix to every must move in both houses in November if they win.
