The Trump Presidency VII

So Logger, Dear Leader has caved in on the child separation scumbaggery. And in doing so demonsting the lie, inanely repeated by Trumpists, that his hands were tied by the Democrats. “It’s da law... the Dems...”

I hate to tell you this, but that has been a symbol of the US Senate from it's creation. The Fasces was a originally a symbol of the Senate during the Roman Republic.
It was swiped by the Roman Emperors.

I knew it came from ancient Rome. Thanks for the info. I was talking about the symbol was from a bygone era when Italy, specifically Rome when it was the epicenter of European power

The Fasces were a symbol of office carried by the Lictors, bodyguards and officials that protected and served the Magistrates.

Just a comment on "can't happen here".

How far away is a final solution from the Japanese internment camps of WWII? The Tuskegee Syphilis experiment? The Trail of Tears?

Thinking it can't happen here is precisely the reason it can happen here.

Just like the basic tenet of magicians and conmen is that the easiest person to fool is the one sure they can't be fooled.

"Congress will never go along with the crazy things he said."

'Oh, that was just campaign talk, everyone knows politicians never mean that stuff."

"Take him seriously, not literally."

As you noted here, it's already happened here, several times, often openly and to widespread applause.

Before anyone applauds any order Dolt 45 signs (and it won't be good, as nothing he does voluntarily is good), and are tempted to say "how wonderful!" or "Well, it's something" - just read up on his various ban on Muslim immigration.

These white supremacists will try again, so in my eyes they get no credit, and you should feel the same.

(No, I'm not talking to you, Toupee Fiasco apologists...)

WHen the US Senate opens a session, one of the sergeant at arms comes into the session carrying a fasces (although it's called a "Mace") to open the session. You can watch it all time on C Span.

It's not really news that symbols from the Roman Republic have been recycled. The point really is that the word fascism or fascist is derived from this.

Yeah, Trump is about to to go eight and three quarters shades of cray cray on some unrelated topic. His wife and daughter just made him their bitch. He's going to have to double down on tariffs or the Russia investigation to prove in his mind that he's no one's bitch.

Picking up a derail from a different thread, where fervent Trump supporters are pointing at random, unhinged, lefties to draw attention away from the American government having been taken over by a POTUS (plus enablers) who is an unhinged, racist, anti-democratic cult leader doing his level best to transform the USA into a previously unimaginable dystopia.

Donald Trump’s longtime fixer Michael Cohen has just resigned from his position as Deputy Finance Chair of the Republican National Committee. In his resignation letter, Cohen cited his opposition to Donald Trump’s policy of separating immigrant children from their parents and locking them in cages.

Yeah, I read that this morning. It sounds principled. But it probably wasn't. This was a job where he was paid and had to do absolutely nothing. He was expected to be terminated from this non-job job since he and the President's legal team split. Pretty soon Trump will be saying 'Cohen who'? Or just calling him a 'liar' because he flipped.

Actually, a long way. There's an important difference between concentration camps (which the internment camps were) and extermination camps. The former are about surveillance and control of problematic populations : the latter are about genocide. Concentration camps often become death-traps, of course, through lack of facilities and support and/or brutal regimes, but that isn't their immediate purpose.

It's a potential weigh station on the road. If the inhumane treatment can be normalized, then further dehumanizing can occur.

I'd also say "scapegoated populations" is more accurate in practice, blanket vilification of a demographic is almost assuredly based on a complete farce.

And I don't want to think about the diplomatic repurcussions from this. The people being held are citizens of the countris they came from, and countries get angry if they think their citizens are being mistreated, be they here legally or no.

I smeall Cohen going Joe Valachi or Sammy the Bull Gravino on Trump, since this will probably put him on Trump's enemies list.

The other shocker was Scaramucci coming out hard against the policy. Note to Donnie Johnny, when guys called "The Fixer" and "The Mooch", like out of a Damon Runyan short story, think you're a reprehensible sack of ****, it's time to throw Miller and Sessions and the other Klan types out of your inner circle.

Sessions looks like Keebler Elf. Miller OTOH, reminds me of a cross between the Grim Reaper and Nosferatu. That man gives me the heebie jeebees.

Also, i dont really think Sessions is in his inner circle. I just dont think Trump can get rid of him.
