The Trump Presidency VII

With the cost of tariffs passed on to the American consumer? Of course we are.

Right now your feckless leader is contemplating a large tariff on what he's calling Canadian Automobiles. What he's not aware of is that the auto industry is so heavily integrated that all he'll do with that is drive the price of vehicles to the US consumer 20-30%. Canadians sell US and Mexican based parts manufacturers steel and aluminium, the US is making the components that are later assembled in Mexican and Canadian finishing plants. You tell me where the burden is going to fall when he imposes the tariffs on finished cars? Or, you can keep with the current arrangement and be able to afford your cars and trucks.
The reason why he’s contemplating it, and with the implementation of the corporate tax cuts, is to start the process of these companies to start moving back, at least some of them. It’s going to take time.

There’s many reasons why those companies are there in the first place. Much of it has to do with the NAFTA loophole.

No, her staff did it for her, she couldn't even speak for herself. And it was pretty milquetoasty at that: she hopes both sides can come together.

I really don't understand this. The GOP control the presidency, Congress and the Senate. I've been assured that the Democrats are powerless, and that we now live in a one party state.

WHY would the GOP need the Democrats to come to the table?

They don't. This was purely an executive decision to start with so the president can easily just order a policy change just like he created this policy a few months ago.

As for getting legislation passed, they haven't quite gone full one party state yet, because they are unwilling to say postpone elections and such. So unless their members in the house and senate back their destruction of democracy they are somewhat limited in what they can do.

But they certainly do not need any democratic support to stop this, they are just holding the kids hostage because holding the dreamers hostage wasn't enough.

Don't know if the nightmare scenario coming online has been posted yet, but just in case:

Trump orders creation of a standalone Space Force

There are rogues states, then there are end-of-the-world, authentic pricks.

"My administration is reclaiming America's heritage as the world's greatest spacefaring nation," Trump said in the East Room, joined by members of his space council. "The essence of the American character is to explore new horizons and to tame new frontiers."

He said the new branch's creation will be overseen by Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"When it comes to defending America, it is not enough to merely have an American presence in space. We must have American dominance in space," Trump said. He added: "We are going to have the Air Force and we are going to have the Space Force, separate but equal."

Aren't there treaties that are supposed to stop the militarisation of space?

Aren't there treaties that are supposed to stop the militarisation of space?

Yes and depending on exactly what they do they might squeek by on technicalities but this is the wording of the treaty.

"ARTICLE IV
States Parties to the Treaty undertake not to place in orbit around the earth any objects carrying nuclear weapons or any other kinds of weapons of mass destruction, install such weapons on celestial bodies, or station such weapons in outer space in any other manner.

The moon and other celestial bodies shall be used by all States Parties to the Treaty exclusively for peaceful purposes. The establishment of military bases, installations and fortifications, the testing of any type of weapons and the conduct of military manoeuvres on celestial bodies shall be forbidden. The use of military personnel for scientific research or for any other peaceful purposes shall not be prohibited. The use of any equipment or facility necessary for peaceful exploration of the moon and other celestial bodies shall also not be prohibited."

So as long as this military space force keeps all the military parts on the ground and only peaceful exploration in space it could be OK.

Of course at the moment I think our Space Marines would have to be hitching a ride with the Russians.

Maybe he misunderstood what 'Illegal Aliens' actually means!

I think it is the rose colored glasses that he looks at the 50's and 60's as the height of america for. He yearns to be kenedy with the space race, but with a more militaristic nationalistic spin that he puts on everything. Imagine him having space marines at his big military parade in DC! If that doesn't get him hard for the first time in years nothing will.

Trump tweets

"Why don’t the Democrats give us the votes to fix the world’s worst immigration laws? Where is the outcry for the killings and crime being caused by gangs and thugs, including MS-13, coming into our country illegally?"

Of course conveniently omitting the total lack of a bill that they were supposed to vote on. It is impressively fact free, and republicans love it.
