The Trump Presidency VII

I have to wonder what Logger has to say today. Yesterday, South Carolina turned away one of the Senate's most conservative members because Trump felt slighted by him.

Is Logger going to call Sanford is a librul or a RINO? I hated Sanford's politics but seriously?

And we have a Major political party that has become totally controlled by one individual, with no differing opinions tolerated.
We have had a few minor parties like that before, but never a major party.
This is really scary. Scary enough for me to once agasin say anybody concerned with America surviving as a free country had better begin to take the idea of armed resistence to a tyrant seroulsy.

Giving up one's principles in order to defeat Trump isn't good for the country. One of the reasons that Trump represents a threat to the nation is that he is a man of no principles. It does no good to give up your principles in order to oust him.

It you take a knife to a gun fight, you lose.

The rage against GWB was one of the most misguided in history and, in no small part, paved the way for Trump.

A rather substantial criticism against GWB was made up you see. Unilateralism? No, even in Iraq he had the majority of G7 and the majority of NATO behind him. Perpetual war? No, he stopped after one, two if you count Afghanistan. Dodging draft for Vietnam? No, he served in a minor role, after the war already ended. Saying stupid things? Most were lifted from Walter Mondale, not something said by GWB. This is not to say there weren't ample and justified criticisms of GWB in those fields, on the contrary, but most were considerably exaggarated.

Now apply these to Trump, who just ditched the G7 allies for North Korea of all places, got out of serving in Vietnam due to a life-threatning bone growth in one or both of his feet (he can't remember) and whose idea of great wisdom looks like this:

Robert De Niro, a very Low IQ individual, has received too many shots to the head by real boxers in movies. I watched him last night and truly believe he may be “punch-drunk.” I guess he doesn’t realize the economy is the best it’s ever been with employment being at an all time high, and many companies pouring back into our country. Wake up Punchy!

Posted on his twitter account about five minutes before this post. I didn't even have to dig up anything old.

Having spent those lines of attack against GWB, what are you left with?

McHrozni

I despise Trump more then any other President in my lifetime, but I do not like the fact that a few people here would hate any President who has an "R' after his name just as much.

Trump on De Niro

"Robert De Niro, a very Low IQ individual, has received to many shots to the head by real boxers in movies. I watched him last night and truly believe he may be “punch-drunk.” I guess he doesn’t..."

"...realize the economy is the best it’s ever been with employment being at an all time high, and many companies pouring back into our country. Wake up Punchy!"

I would SO love to here De Niro reply:

"Ya Talking To ME? Ya Talking To ME?;.....

This is NOT the case with me. My respect for Eisenhower is enormous and I greatly respect G.W. Bush. There are even things I respect W. for.

Having a different opinion does not make someone my enemy. When i was getting my degree in politics, I was a member of the Young Democrats and had many friends that were members of the Young Republicans. My debate team partner as a matter of fact. I was invited to the Big Republican barbeque held every year.

Few people understand that this is the one thing that separates a democratic Republic from authoritarian rule is respect for opposing opinions.

Still, I would take W over the loser in the White House now.
And I would take Blair and New Labour over the shower we Brits have now. I don't suppose either of us ever thought we'd end up saying such things.

"Smile", people said, "Things could be worse". So I smiled, and sure enough, things got worse ...

I voted for both Bob Packwood and Mark Hatfield in their last elections. I didn't know about the sex thing with Packwood until after the election. I don't despise Bush or Regan supporters. Trump is different. Trump is a Russian Whore, traitor to his nation and our allies and friend to all America should stand against. I would never say you've betrayed your country just by being a Republican. However, if you continue to support Trump, you're less than a real America. You've betrayed your nation and countrymen. To be indifferent to selling out to the Russian is to have sold out to the Russians yourself. That said, real, loyal Americans are willing to accept anyone coming back into the fold of true devotion to the country with open arms.

For the record, I think, when all the dust settles, the GOP as we knew it will not survive. It will collapse with Trump. It might take a few legit conservatives a long time to admit the GOP is now a hopeless cause, but it will happen.

One of the greatest challenges a general can face is command of a multi-national force, and I think Eisenhower outshone any historical figure in his performance. His skills proved to be transferable to the Presidency in a very challenging period.

I think it's fair to say that Eisenhower laid the foundations of the post-WW2 epoch of (relative) peace and prosperity which is only now being finally demolished by the likes of Putin and Trump.

History will be kind to Eisenhower, and justifiably so.

... and I greatly respect G.W. Bush.
The last of the old school, did we but know it. I think his failure to secure a second term so traumatised the GOP (in that it tended to confirm the inexorable demographic decline that was their greatest fear) that it was opened up to Karl Rove and the new school he represented.

It's said that Bush Sr. once quipped "I think I'm the only one in the room who hasn't been born again!" (according to reports at the time) : classical Greek tragedians would have eaten this story up.

As we know it. But it has already changed. Free markets and fiscal responsibility were always core principles and they were thrown out. Right now, it is a cult of personality.

It will reinvent itself as all parties do.

Or die and be replaced by something else,as happened with the Federalists and the Whigs.
Parties that become personality cults don't survive the personality.

And a lot of the Trump supporters are not bothering to hide the bigotry anymore. I think the White Supremacy is going become open in another year or so.

I remember when they said that about the Whigs!

Fair enough. Also the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans.

But the parties before the current President are very different than they were before the 1960s when the Democrats lost the Solid South.or very very different than they were in the late 1800s. I'm guessing that even after Trump there will be a Republican party. Just not sure what it will look like,

From the same interview on why he wants Russia back in G7

"If Putin were sitting next to me & we were having dinner, I could say, 'would you do me a favor? Would you get out of Syria? Would you get out of Ukraine? Just come on.'... I could ask him to do things that are good for the world."
