A visual summary of the G7 summit:
President Donald Trump said Saturday that he was pulling the U.S. out of the Group of Seven's official statement of common values and accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the host of the G-7 conference, of "false statements."
An administration official earlier had said that Trump would join the summit communique. Trump had left on his way to Singapore for a North Korean nuclear summit when he tweeted that U.S. representatives would not sign it.
"Based on Justin's false statements at his news conference, and the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs to our U.S. farmers, workers and companies, I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!" Trump wrote in one tweet before following it up with another shot at Trudeau.
"PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our @G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, 'US Tariffs were kind of insulting' and he 'will not be pushed around,'" Trump wrote. "Very dishonest & weak. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!"
Can we agree canadian dairy tariffs are actually bad?
But they are bad for Canada, too.
We subsidize our dairy farmers to the tune of 22 Billion dollars. If you want to end those subsidies then yes they are bad and we should end them. That tariff prevents dumping on the Canadian market destroying their own dairy farmers.
Who is we in this situation?
If country X wants to tax country X citizens to give it to country Y, country Y is the winner there.
We is the US. The dairy subsidies in the US amount to nearly 3/4 of the producer's revenue.
Hypocrisy at its finest is at play here.
How so? Canadian subsidies to their domestic industry is bad for Canada people. US subsidies on exports to Canada is good for Canada people.
What subsidies? Canada has no history of giving subsidies to dairy farmers.
About a year ago they gave a one time tax break to dairy farmers to offset lost revenue when Canada signed an agreement with 10 nations allowing them access to the Canadian market.
But they have never given money on an annual basis to dairy farmers the way the US does.
FYI: Canadians do not think being able to buy cheaper milk from abroad is worth having our farms go out of business. Your concept of better does not apply here, thankfully.
People also think it is better to protect Bastiat's candlemakers. It doesn't make it any less stupid.
Protecting a local industry from a foreign one that is absurdly subsidized so that they don't dump on our market is the exact opposite of stupid.
To Bob the Coward.
The United States Dairy industry is subsidized greatly.
The Canadian Dairy industry is not subsidized at all.
This makes it attractive for US Dairy farmers to sell their products in Canada and almost impossible for Canadian Dairy farmers to compete. What do you think the result of Canada lifting those tariffs on the Canadian Dairy industry?
Greater consumption in aggregate paid for by the American taxpayer/Chinese credit holder. With aggregate economic welfare being higher.
That didn't answer my question. What happens to the Canadian Dairy industry?
