Brexit: Now What? Part IV

We need a leaver in charge to take us through this Brexit process. Having a remainer in charge is a disaster for the country.
I am glad you appreciate the disaster that is unfolding.

What do you think a leaver like Liam Fox, Boris Johnson or David Davis would have done differently if they had been the leader instead of filling the three main posts responsible for delivering brexit.

For a start they could sack Hammond and put a leaver in charge of the Treasury.

I suppose you think Chancellor of the Exchequer isn't one of the 'three main posts'? Yeah, right.

Well, technically the UK does have various Other Bits around the world, and even within Europe, but most if not all of them are outside the EU (some are in the Customs Union).
Yes, the British Overseas Territories. They are listed here in the website of the Friends of the British Overseas Territories, a charitable status organisation as well it might be. FOTBOT. https://www.fotbot.org/territories They even have a squiggly flag (Unofficial) with the Union Jack on it.

Where is that the EU position? I thought that was the UK position to keep the good friday agreement intact. I don't think the EU as a whole really cares about it, as the only member that likely cares at all about it is Ireland.
Incorrect and Ireland has a veto on the eventual deal.

I agree, but what are the alternatives ?

  • NI staying in the customs union and EEA. Hard border in the Irish Sea
  • Hard Brexit and collapse of the GFA

It is clear that the first is the EU position, from Barnier today:

Our backstop cannot be extended to the whole of the UK.

Turning to Northern Ireland, he says there must be common rules on the island

I just can't see that being agreed by the current Government, perhaps by PM Corbyn.

Not a main post for delivering brexit. The main beneficiary of brexit perhaps. £350m a week extra to spend!

What different decisions do you think a leaver would have made as chancellor or do you just think all pro Europe ministers should be sacked?

Well, that and you'd also need the Irish government to agree.

The same Irish government that went running to Brussels before the ink was dry on the Brexit ballot papers to secure a promise that a united Ireland would see the North move seamlessly back into the EU?

I'll take a wild guess and say they'd agree.

Also the Crown Dependancies.
These (Channel Islands and Isle of Man) may get caught in the crossfire (I'm speaking figuratively; at least I hope so) of the Irish situation, as they are included in the Common Travel Area along with the UK and Republic of Ireland. If people start messing about with that CTA, and Brexit will disrupt it probably fatally, then the legal provisions under which residents of the Crown Dependencies have travel and residence rights in the U.K. will become non functional.

So I apologise for omitting them from the enumeration of the residual Territories dependent on the UK.
