So Trump showed his belly to the country actually dumping steal on us (China) and got tough with the countries that weren't.

All they have to do is invest in Trump projects and they'll get "fair" treatment as well.........

Trump claims to be emperor:
WASHINGTON — President Trump’s lawyers have for months quietly waged a campaign to keep the special counsel from trying to force him to answer questions in the investigation into whether he obstructed justice, asserting that he cannot be compelled to testify and arguing in a confidential letter that he could not possibly have committed obstruction because he has unfettered authority over all federal investigations.
In a brash assertion of presidential power, the 20-page letter — sent to the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, and obtained by The New York Times — contends that the president cannot illegally obstruct any aspect of the investigation into Russia’s election meddling because the Constitution empowers him to, “if he wished, terminate the inquiry, or even exercise his power to pardon.”

If the president does it, it isn't illegal.

That is true of a lot of things. I don't see why that is a hard concept. The president can order certain groups of people to try and kill other certain groups of people. It is illegal if I try the same thing.

Presumably if Trump did do something such as sexually assualt a guy there would be a legal route to make a complaint.

So I guess the question is whether you are trying to advance the concept that the President can do whatever he wants with some exceptions. Or he must follow the law with some exceptions. The exceptions in either case are the interesting point.

According to that novel interpretation of the emperor's president's unfettered authority, didn't Obama have every right to have""wires tapped" in Trump Tower"?

Am I wrong in suspecting that the reason Trump is imposing tariffs is that it's about the only thing he can do? Even his executive orders get overturned by the courts, but nobody can stop him imposing tariffs. He has the power, so he's damned well going to use it, no matter how much damage it does to his country's economy and its relationships with its allies.

I thought he could only impose tariffs for reasons of national security.

Quite a reach to apply that to Canada and Mexico.

If the Congress had the will, I think Trump could be opposed on this.

For the duration of his presidency, he could use his discretion to determine it isn't something worth using limited resources on, and stop the DoJ from looking into it.

Yes the president is using an exception that allows him to impose tariffs for national security reasons. The existence of a US steel industry is of national security interest as is the production of cars. So tariffs have to be put inlace to protect US steel production. The problem is that since it is not e.g. China that is the national security threat, but the low global price of steel, the tariffs have to be global. Thus Europe, Canada, Mexico etc., all close US allies, are being hit by tariffs. The actions of the US will be challenged at the WTO. Any judgement will be slow because the US is blocking judges appointments.

Can't wait until Pence kicks off the next craze: kneeling and kissing His Majesty's ring. That'd be just the right moment to start dressing the Marines in Redcoats. Semper fi, baby!
