He protected the sainthood of Reagan. It meant that they could love a criminal with out being all open about it.

Reagan was on board with the Israelis selling weapons to Iran. He actively encouraged it because he didn't want Saddam to win too easily. Saddam being an American "ally" (Yes, those were scare quotes.) wasn't all that important to him, and the fact that we were industriously (pun intended) supplying him with war materials at the same time we were encouraging others of our allies to do the same for the other side didn't seem like a problem.

North's original strategy was to use Israel as a conduit to sell arms to the the Iranians since they were already doing that with the blessing of the U.S., and then reimburse Israel for that.

Local politics conspired to block that avenue, and he got more direct about it.

As I recall, our local politics (i.e. Congress) explicitly blocked the more direct avenue, making North's actions (and higher) illegal. But true American Patriots are above the law.
