Barbara Bush has died

A bastion of conservative empathy.

As she said about Katrina

"Almost everyone I’ve talked to says, ‘We’re going to move to Houston.’ What I’m hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.

And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this, this is working very well for them."

She may have been any number of horrible things, I don't know, but at least she didn't feel the need to loudly proclaim her faults, virtues, monetary worth, opinions, or last bowel movement on social media.

I thought she was pretty cool

Funny quote from her George W the idiot mentioned yesterday

You want to know why George W. is the way he is?” the 43rd president recalled his 92-year-old mother asking her doctor. “Because I drank and smoked while I was pregnant with him.

Barbara Bush was my favorite first lady ever. (The first one I can remember was Pat Nixon.) Although, Rosalynn Carter was pretty good, too.

Barbara Bush looked hotter 3 days before her death than our previous First Lady ever has.

Yes, I mean it.

???

Seriously, even if you really think that, don't you realize how bad it sounds?

@1:43 Al Franken's anecdote about Barbara Bush.

TO be fair, a lot of the people who had to deal with her came away with the same strongly negative opinion of her, and most of wghat I heard from her gave me the exact same impression (eg. the second Iraq War, folks stranded by Hurricane Katrina).

It's nice that she championed literacy for sure, but apart from that, she was apparently a pretty cruel person.

Yes, she championed literacy, but was still mostly the same elitist, racist, sexist, homophobe as the rest of her family and political party.

And where she wasn't (she was apparently pro-choice), she had no problem compromising her own principles in order to support the GOP's elitist, racist, sexist, and homophobic platform. In fact, her entire involvement in US politics was a litany of compromised principles and subservience to the male political elite.

We haven't had a truly great First Lady since Eleanor Roosevelt.

And, no disrespect to Barbara Bush,if you think that you have to be blind.

Or one of our resident white supremacist trolls.

President Donald Trump will not join first lady Melania Trump in attending the funeral services for Barbara Bush, the White House said in a statement, citing a desire to "avoid disruptions" stemming from the increased security presence and "out of respect for the Bush Family and friends."

"First Lady Melania Trump will attend the memorial service for Barbara Bush this Saturday on behalf of the First Family," a spokesperson confirmed Friday. "To avoid disruptions due to added security, and out of respect for the Bush Family and friends attending the service, President Trump will not attend."

Barbara Bush, mother of the 43rd president, George W. Bush, and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush as well as former first lady as wife of 41st President George H.W. Bush, passed away on Tuesday. She was 92 and had been reported by a family spokesman to be in failing health shortly before returning to her home for palliative care.

The former first lady will lay in repose in Houston on Friday in a ceremony open to the public. The Bush family and friends will then gather for a private funeral service on Saturday.

...

A spokesperson for former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton confirmed they will attend the funeral, as will former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama, according to Bush family representative.

In total, roughly 1,500 guests will attend the 90-minute service, the family announced Friday. The ceremony will feature eulogies from Jeb Bush and Jon Meacham, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and historian who authored a 2015 New York Times best-selling biography on the first President Bush.

@1:43 Al Franken's anecdote about Barbara Bush.

Yeah.....As a comedian, I liked Al a lot. As a radio talk show host, I liked Al a fair amount. As a senator, I thought he was good, and he shouldn't have resigned.

This anecdote made him look bad, and he didn't even know why, and that was the biggest thing wrong with him, and it is directly related to what caused his downfall as a senator, and it doesn't make Barbara Bush look bad, at all.

From the Trump thread but off topic there:
Barbara Bush HATED Donald Trump on every level. While I do think Barbara Bush was a bit of a racist in the sense she didn't really have a clue what the lives of minorities were like. She was I believe a bit of a closet feminist.

Not a closet feminist, more like a facade-feminist, look behind the curtain and some of the biggest feminist causes she was not so interested in them.

Yes, she made a commencement speech that she'd like to see a woman in the White House. What else you got?

From a blog in Spectator for what it's worth:
She dropped out of Smith College, from which the women’s lib movement would later explode, to marry and raise a family. Firmly independent but a dutiful wife, she was a liberal on abortion and gay rights but learned to keep mum for her husband’s sake. She was also tougher than him but ploughed her energy into stiffening his spine. As First Lady, she was content to be the strong woman behind a successful man and was proud to be known to millions of Americans for her clam chowder and chocolate chip cookie recipes. ‘I don’t fool around with his office and he doesn’t fool around with my household,’ she said, drawing an unfashionable line between the personal and political.

For all she presented as a well-manicured bluebonnet she was fierce as a Texas bobcat, especially in defence of her family. Asked what she made of Geraldine Ferraro, her husband’s rival for the vice presidency in 1984, she snipped: ‘I can’t say it but it rhymes with rich’.

<SNIP> I get the feeling that anyone who stood in the way of her family's political ambitions would get suffocated with a pillow in their sleep.
