They have apparently announced that Cohen is the target of a criminal investigation.

Just got through talking with my kid sister. who is now a practicing Attorney, and she said Cohen's negotiating a deal for the RNC Finance guy might be damning because it establishing a pattern;the Cohen doing this kind of thing was not just a one off but a regular job for him.
In California, according to her,the state bar would be looking at Cohen very closely for possible disbarment proceedings.

So it could hardly be doing something for a friend. I'm pretty sure Stormy Daniels is the least of Cohen's and Trump's concerns now.

Ken White from Popehat picked up on that as well.

It should also be noted that Keith M. Davidson represented all three of the women when Cohen negotiated these deals.

My sister in our phone chat today said the head of the legal firm she works for (who was once a strong Republian but quit the party after Trump's nomination) said that Cohen was the kind of sleazeball who gave Lawyers a bad name.

NLawyers for Michael Cohen, personal lawyer to Donald Trump, argued in a hearing today that a recent FBI raid on his offices swept up sensitive documents that should be protected by client-attorney privilege. The Southern District of New York (SDNY) has an interesting counterargument: Cohen is barely a practicing lawyer, anyway—which they claim to know because they’ve been reading his emails.

A 22-page opposition document filed by the US attorney to counter Cohen’s request for a temporary restraining order on seized files (pdf) reveals that the Southern District has been privy to Cohen’s email for a while now, having obtained a previously undisclosed search warrant. According to the documents, “Cohen has exceedingly few clients and a low volume of potentially privileged communications” (p.1) and “performs little to no legal work” (p.4)

IOW .. COHEN IS **********

But yeah TBD, arbitration any second now.

So Cohen makes his living not actually practicing law, but acting as a bagman making payoffs.
One has to wonder at this point if a certain Italian American Franternal Organiztion has used Cohen's services...

Bagmen generally don't claim or pay any taxes on the income that they make from carrying a bag of money from one person to another.

Well, I don't know if the Stormy Daniels stuff will bring down Trump, but it certainly looks like it's likely to bring down Cohen.

Gee, now we are just going to go ahead and accept the word of the lawyers for the Government, who have already apparently reviewed the documents.

And that is worth a laughing dog, folks.

Does anyone here know how long they've been investigating Cohen and how it started? I read about 1/4 the PDF file then started skimming and didn't see a date.

U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood on Friday ordered attorneys for Cohen to hand over a list of Cohen’s law clients and proof of their relationship by 10 a.m. Monday, so she can decide whether materials seized from Cohen’s office by federal law enforcement agents last week should be protected by attorney-client privilege.

That list will be a public record, Wood said, because the identities of an attorney’s clients are not subject to attorney-client privilege unless the mere name itself would reveal the kind of advice sought or given.

...

Government lawyers also suggested Trump’s lack of computer savvy makes it unlikely there are many emails from him.

“Cohen apparently rarely emailed with President Trump, and has identified no other clients with whom he has an attorney-client relationship,” they said.

Prosecutors said the files are unlikely to contain attorney-client communications with Trump about an alleged pre-election $130,000 hush money deal with adult film actress Stormy Daniels, since Trump claims he didn’t know about the payment.

“There is reason to doubt that even communications with his only publicly identified client regarding payments to Stephanie Clifford, who is also known as Stormy Daniels, would be protected by attorney-client privilege. Among other things, President Trump has publicly denied knowing that Cohen paid Clifford, and suggested to reporters that they had to ‘ask Michael’ about the payment,” the government lawyers wrote.

I think that's pretty much the definition of a "fixer".

Hello, fellow Popehat fan! I haven't visited today but will do so next.

How is it possible that Trump knows how to use Twitter, but not emails? This is 2017 not 1987.

WHY THE HELL NOT.?

Do you hear yourself? And did you read the 22 page document? Cohen is very probably toast and it very well may have little to do with Trump.

No THEY haven't. Everything is before a filter team. You didn't read the government response to Cohen's request for a TRO.

Of course I did. The fact that they are trying to rely on their own in house rules rather than a special master.

It is perfectly appropriate. There is no need for a special master. You're suggesting that the US attorneys will not by the book fairly filter out any privileged attorney client privileges.

Cohen's request for a TRO or Special Master will likely be refused.
