School shooting Florida

Become knowledgeable.

Would your theory work for brain surgery? " the surgeon is a dick head so I guess I better go in with an ice cream scoop and a fork".

Or to be less of a jerk about it, your logic gets people trapped in snow storms killed, pretty good evidence it doesn't work in a crisis.

Everyone has the right to have and/or state an opinion on anything. The only thing that "knowledge" affects is the weight others give to the knowledgeable person's opinions e.g.s

- in matters regarding the JFK assassination, I give a lot of weight to the opinions of HSienzant (Hank) but I give no weight whatsoever to those of Micahjava.

- in matters regarding the Apollo programme and Aerospace in general, I give a lot of weight to the opinions of JayUtah and STS60. I give no weight whatsoever to those of people like Bart Sibrel or Jarrah White.

See how that works?

Two students arrested at Stoneman Douglas on weapons charges; deputy suspended for sleeping

Sun Sentinel said:
Two students were arrested Tuesday for bringing knives to the Parkland school where 17 were killed by a gunman on Feb. 14 and a third is being mentally evaluated for making online threats.

Compounding the anxiety and tension emanating from the campus, a Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School deputy was suspended for sleeping on the job after being caught by a student on Monday evening, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The student notified a sergeant patrolling the school that Deputy Moises Carotti was asleep in his patrol car, said Veda Coleman-Wright, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.

The sergeant knocked on Carotti’s window to wake him up, she said. Carotti was suspended with pay while an internal affairs investigation is launched...

Parkland shooting suspect’s brother has ‘all the same flags,’ prosecutors say after arrest

The Washington Post said:
A day after the brother of the Parkland school shooting suspect was arrested on a trespassing charge at the campus of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, a Florida judge slapped him with a $500,000 bond and ordered him to undergo a psychological evaluation.

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office also petitioned a judge to strip Zachary Cruz, 18, of his right to own or possess a firearm under a new law passed this month. Cruz’s attorney, Joseph Kimok, argued that prosecutors were being overly harsh on his client only because of his brother, Nikolas Cruz...

The bond for trespassing, Kimok said, is typically $25, which Zachary Cruz had already posted, the Miami Herald reported.

Prosecutors said Cruz was exhibiting worrisome behavior.

“[Zachary Cruz] has all the same flags present as his brother,” Assistant Broward State Attorney Sarahnell Murphy said, according to the Herald.

Zachary Cruz told deputies he had skateboarded through the high school because he wanted to “reflect on the school shooting and soak it in,” according to his arrest report. To do so, he bypassed the locked doors and gates of the campus and ignored previous warnings by school officials to stay off the property, officials said.

Authorities seemed to be unnerved by his repeated visits to the school and with what appeared to be admiration for his brother and his notoriety as an accused mass murderer. Murphy said Zachary Cruz had been overheard talking about his older brother’s “popularity” during his visits to see him in jail, and had talked about setting up a fan club for him, the Herald reported...

This upcoming Saturday is the day for the "March for Our Lives" rallies. Big one in D.C., roughly 800 or so "sister marches" across the country.

I am planning on going to the one in Denver.

Of note, most of the speakers (in Denver, at least) are either survivors of mass shootings, or immediate relatives of victims or survivors of mass shootings. These marches are very youth focused.

After that, additional rallies on April 20, the anniversary of the Columbine shootings. The current crop of organizers are very aware of the Enthusiasm Gap and are working to keep momentum and keep the gap closed at least through the mid-terms.

These are very disturbing indicators. This boy needs to be watched closely, and not be allowed access to guns of any kind.

That is indeed a very disturbing set of circumstances. With bail set at $500,000 I presume he remains in custody pending his court date, which I think is a very good call.

Nick, we could be swimming with lots of hot bitches...

New York Post said:
The brother of Nikolas Cruz, who allegedly gunned down 17 people inside a Florida high school, was overheard in jail bragging to his sibling about how many girls they could bed thanks to the shooter’s infamy, prosecutors said Tuesday...

“He has been heard and observed discussing how popular his brother is now, that his face is everywhere and his name is national,” Assistant State Attorney Saranell Murphys said.

“There is discussion of starting some sort of pen pal or fan club and how many girls he is capable of attracting, referring to his brother Nikolas.”...

Lawyer calls $500,000 bond for the brother of the Parkland shooter ‘outrageous’

Miami Herald said:
Calling a $500,000 bond for trespassing “unreasonable” and “outrageous,” an attorney filed a motion Thursday to release Zachary Cruz, the brother of the confessed Marjory Stoneman Douglas High shooter Nikolas Cruz.

“Zachary Cruz should not be in a jail cell,” his attorney Joseph Kimok wrote in the 17-page motion filed in Broward Circuit Court. “In the light most favorable to the state, he skateboarded around the campus of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School after hours.”

“Zachary Cruz is not Nikolas Cruz,” his attorney wrote in the court filing. “Zachary is an eighteen-year-old kid who up until four months ago had led a relatively normal life. Overnight, the world’s attention turned on Zachary’s family and Zachary’s entire life was put under a microscope. Zachary Cruz did not bring any of this upon himself.”

Jail records indicated Thursday night that there were no inmates named Zachary Cruz in the Broward County jail system. It was unclear if he bonded out...

This could heat up because it's seemingly the first application of the new Florida laws after Parkland. We might see interest here from civil liberty and pro-gun activists. What degree of "mental and behavioral things" are necessary to take away guns and freedom? Is this specific incident with Zach being taken too far because it's in the spotlight and it's so closely linked to Parkland?

All excellent ideas all compelling arguments

Unfortunately, because these measures would not 100% guarantee an end to ALL gun violence, the 2A "muh guns" crowd will fall back to their default position.... "if it doesn't fix everything, do nothing" a.k.a. the perfect solution fallacy.
the linked “news” article cites another study that determined that assault weapon bans show inconclusive results to curtailing mass shootings. That doesn’t stop the “news” article from showing misleading graphs, and suggesting that such a ban could save 650 lives per year. I’m sure subsequent articles will be less forth coming with the relevant science.

It doesn't purport to be a news article. It is clearly labeled "Opinions." The writer makes a series of specific, relatively narrow proposals, based on cited research. What do you see as the column's flaws? "Second Amendment, Amen!" is not an adequate response.

The NRA is vociferously opposed to any research on gun violence being done... their lackeys in US Federal and State Governments support that position. We all know why that is... its because they don't want the truth coming out... they have plenty they want suppressed from pubic view.

An informed public is a powerful public

On face value the seems incredibly harsh, biased treatment for having a nutty brother

The "harsh treatment" may be justified. This was not a one-time incident; Cruz has in fact trespassed at the school several times, despite having been repeatedly told he was not allowed on the premises. He also gave a phony address to police when he was arrested; he does not live in Parkland anymore - in fact he doesn't even live in Broward County anymore. Meaning he has to make a pointed effort to travel - after his own school day ends - to another county to this school campus he has no personal association with (aside from the fact his brother massacred students there) or reason to be visiting and in fact has been warned away from, for no purpose other than to assert his presence, intimidating the school's actual students who have seen him. Meanwhile during jail visits he openly expresses admiration and revels in his brother's notoriety, excitedly discussing plans to exploit their newfound "fame" for attention and fun.

The bail is necessary because Cruz has proven that he does not care and is unlikely to follow yet another instruction to stay away from the high school and its students, and therefore it's safer to keep him constrained while his case is in process.

Do you have a link to this please?

What's the usual sentencing guidelines for what he has actually been charged and arrested for?
