This is going to be big. Trump will secure his re-election. It will be like Nixon going to see that Chinaman.

To think Donald "Homer Simpson" Trump could just sit out the negotiation process and get into the game last minute and win......

I wouldn't know whether to cheer or boo some more hoping he doesn't get reelected!

Maybe Kim is going to tell Trump exactly what he's got on him (courtesy of Putin), and threaten to reveal it unless Trump lifts sanctions. Trump will then pretend he's lifting sanctions because Kim has promised to stop his nuclear weapons programme..

Kim is going to end his nuclear weapons program. He wants to tell that to Trump in person. The talks will go well for the entire world, not just Kim.

In which dream do you currently reside?

Kim won't give up the nukes he has, and he can't do any more development anyway since his testing site was destroyed in the last test.
Promising that he won't make any more nukes in exchange for lifting sanctions and other help is totally one-sided.

And as you said, it gets the added benefit of meeting directly with a particularly stupid and gullible US president.

Ya, point them out for me and I'll watch. I'll be watching those on the left who were fearing nuclear war admitting how stupid their fears were.

ETA: sorry for the late edit (bolded)

Okay, I'll be watching those on the right who have been hoping that Donnie Johnny and his crazy generals would make the peninsula into a greasy smear on a map to see if they start a GoFundMe campaign for a rubber room at the VA because they're inconsolable.

Keep the members posted, won't you.

Don't be ridiculous.

It would be a glassy smear.

As much as I loathe Trump, I'll be overjoyed if he gets a good result from negotiations with North Korea and I won't hesitate to give him credit for it. It's not going to make me suddenly think he's a great POTUS or anything, but I'll be noticeably less disgusted with him until the next time he does something horrible.

What would constitute a "good result" in your opinion?

I think it is vitally important that everyone thinks about what Trump should get out of a deal with North Korea, and not just congratulate him afterwards for diplomatically not starting WW3.

Getting Un to dismantle his nukes and end his missile- and nuclear programs, verified by UN inspectors, in exchange for a lifting of sanctions. If he can manage that, Trump might have a win big enough to ward off an early impeachment.

I do not think Trump has it in him. I also don't think Un is particularly interested in that.

NK has been doing this for decades. Start some policy that angers the world and terrifies the South, ignore all diplomatic overtures until stuff starts to look really bad, then come to the table with an "historic" peace offering which leaves them in position to advance starting from the previous point when it looks like dire times again.

The leadership is interested only in preservation of the existing order. Every maneuver is directed towards that. They know they will lose the next war, but know that the damage to the South is not acceptable to any western nation. They don't want war, but need to stay in power. Concessions will be made, and in ten years they'll have nukes again.

Do we think Trump will actually go to a meeting with NK?

He will change his mind before the end of the week.
