So is there any way that I could change the settings so that when I close my powerbook it continues to operate normally. For example, if I were doing rather intensive operations, could I set it so that I could close the display and it would not sleep?

Of course, if you had an HP zd7188cl TURBO XLC you would never have to wait for it to complete "intensive operations's...

But she do run hot.

yes, with caveats.

It'll work closed if you have an external monitor (or video hookup) and external keyboard hooked up. When you close the lid, hit a key on the external keyboard to wake it back up. Not sure if monitor is absolutely required, but the keyboard is.

Oh, and some claim the powerbook vents heat through the keyboard (it did on the old color iBooks) but I don't think that's true with powerbooks or the current iBooks (they have a fan after all). Probably a good idea to make sure the bottom of the powerbook is elevated for air circulation anyway. I used a coolpad for that when my powerbook was working.

Apparently not...

I looked this up before, but the closest I could get was this, which requires that you have an external monitor.

If you do, just leave it on, close the lid and use an external mouse or keyboard to wake up the computer. Interestingly, if you then open the lid the display won't turn on.

This is quite new, so probably the overheating issue was solved.

ETA: simultaneous post with kevin, down to the minute!

Hmm. THanks for the heads up. Do you know if a bluetooth external keyboard might still wake it up when closed?

Sounds like I need to do some expirimentation...
