The Trump Presidency (Act V - The One Where Everybody Dies)

I have to speak up on this one.

Donald, Jr. is taking heat for this quote:

There is something about the Indian people that is unique here to other parts of the emerging world.”
“You go through a town, and I don’t mean to be glib about it, but you can see the poorest of the poor, and there is still a smile on a face … It’s a different spirit that you don’t see in other parts of the world where people walk around so solemn.”

It’s being compared with a tone deaf “Let them eat cake!”

I don’t see it.

Thoughts?

It's disturbingly close to "slaves were happy to be slaves, they sing songs!"

I wouldn't have any problems with Donny's statement if it was coupled to some meaningful program to better the lives of the poor in question.
Instead he was selling luxury condos and complained that he couldn't do as many deals as he wanted because his daddy is president.

So yeah, it's like he was commenting on a trip to the zoo.

It's tone deaf because he's an uncultured, unlettered clod. Have you ever been to India? People in the sub-continent are quite similar to those in East Asia and they smile in all sorts of circumstances that don't mean "Hey, don't worry, be happy!" Nervousness, fear, embarrassment, confusion... all can elicit a smile.

You might also get the press to say, "Uh, Junior, just where were you when you saw these happy poor people? Getting out of a limo at the hotel?" Do you really think that Donnie Jr. was out working the hustings with Mother Theresa's people?

The "poor but happy" cliche generally promoted by the government in India. The Trumpling must remember that the showcased India he gets to see hides a lot behind the drapes. Murders and oppression of the lower caste and various other minority communities.

'I hear you' - Trump uses cue card to remind him to listen to shooting survivors.

The US president was pictured holding a briefing note that appeared to be a reminder for him to show empathy to school shooting survivors visiting the White House.

Just when I think I have reached peak contempt for the *******, he does something else that startles me.

Also has 45 monogrammed onto his shirt cuffs.

Take his statement.

Now, imagine it was said by Pope Francis. Or Gandhi. Would it be objectionable then?

I imagine the Trump children, raised in the lap of luxury, have internalized the concept that money, possessions and power bring happiness. It may be a revelation to see a beggar on the street in India with practically nothing radiating an inner joy. It may have even been a tiny step towards awareness.

Will those be considered classroom supplies and therefore have to be paid for by the teachers with out being able to deduct them from their taxes too?

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say, "Of course."

And the costs of any applicable licensing, training, maintenance, etc.

I wonder if there will be a mandated standard for the weapons, (type, calibre, etc), or can they just get any old pistol regardless?

Why would they when they cut the tax break for teachers already.

"Teachers’ school supply tax credit is in limbo
The House bill would repeal a $250 tax credit for teachers who spend their own money on school supplies. But the Senate bill would actually help teachers by increasing the tax deduction to $500 per year.

Teachers spend an average of $485 out of pocket on school supplies each year, according to a 2013 study by the National School Supply and Equipment Association."

SOme of our schools can not afford heat in the winter you think they can afford weapons and training for teachers?

I never said “give teachers guns” like was stated on Fake News @CNN & @NBC. What I said was to look at the possibility of giving “concealed guns to gun adept teachers with military or special training experience - only the best. 20% of teachers, a lot, would now be able to

....immediately fire back if a savage sicko came to a school with bad intentions. Highly trained teachers would also serve as a deterrent to the cowards that do this. Far more assets at much less cost than guards. A “gun free” school is a magnet for bad people. ATTACKS WOULD END!

He never said to give teachers guns. He said to give guns to teachers. Glad that's cleared up.

As for the rest of the tweetstorm, his argument is that school shooters are cowards and so would never shoot schools if they thought they'd get shot if they did so. This seems to indicate that he's unaware that the majority of school shooters (and spree killers in general) either commit suicide or goad the police into killing them (AKA "suicide by cop"). They intend to die.

Still, it does seem that there's some sense in there: https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/966662241977360384

I will be strongly pushing Comprehensive Background Checks with an emphasis on Mental Health. Raise age to 21 and end sale of Bump Stocks! Congress is in a mood to finally do something on this issue - I hope!

Let's see whether this actually comes to pass. Given that the only gun legislation he's signed into law was to roll back Obama-era restrictions on people with mental health problems from buying guns, I can only imagine that this is more to do with PR or pressure than it is due to deeply-held personal beliefs. Perhaps someone's had a word in his ear that it might be better to at least pretend to want to do something about this than to do like his son and endorse conspiracy theories that attack the child survivors of a massacre.

What a guy. Does he ever get anything right? Our president appears to have the same knowledge and competence as that loudmouth guy down the street who always knows everything. What do they say? If you think every complex problem has a very simple solution...you probably don't understand the problem.

Headline:

As Trump trashes NAFTA, Mexico turns to Brazilian corn
Mexican buyers imported ten times more corn from Brazil last year amid concern that NAFTA renegotiations could disrupt their U.S. supplies, according to government data and top grains merchants....U.S. farmers, food processors and grain traders have spent months trying to prevent trade relationships from falling apart if the North American Free Trade Agreement implodes. They are trying to protect more than $19 billion in sales to Mexican buyers of everything from corn and soybeans to dairy and poultry...Mexico has long been the top importer of U.S. corn, and is the second largest buyer of U.S. soybeans. I just wonder how much damage The Dunce will do, to our democracy, our international relationships, our economy, before this nightmare is finally over.

US policy under Trump and afterwards can be neatly summarized as this:

A man comes upon another man who is repeatedly hitting his thumb with a hammer. When asked why he’s beating his thumb to a pulp, the man with the hammer replies, “Because it feels so good when I stop!”

A majority of Americans and US partners will feel so relieved when Trump is gone that they will probably let bygones be bygones; see the premature praise Obama got from Europe, simply because he wasn't Bush.

Because of course it is.

That's a short sweet talking point for the NRA but there are a gazillion problems with that solution and no evidence it would do more good than harm.

The biggest problem, you don't think that teacher with a gun risks getting shot by a SWAT member? Risks getting shot or shooting a bystander?

Trump is just parroting what he's being told by the alt-right who has his ear.
