The Trump Presidency (Act V - The One Where Everybody Dies)

The Third regiment is a fully qualified and equipped US Infantry Regiment, so it is not exactly a "ceremonial only " unit. They also provide security to most US Military installations in the DC area.
The Tomb Honor Guard is very selective about who they recruit. Although it's not an official requirement you have to had served a four year hitch with no black marks to be considered.

The changing of the Guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns is impressive. A must see if you visit D.C.

Do they also have a non ceremonial role there? If it came under attack does that include a battle plan?

Are the streets of D.C. built to withstand the weight of tanks? Heavy armament? Trump’s ego?

Not really, to any of the three - and we're discussing a city that can't even keep the subway cars on the tracks.

And we spend quite enough on these shows, from displays for politicians, to sportsball events, to flight shows.

As for this being anything but Trump's "big nuclear button that WORKS" - let's not pretend that the clown has a grasp of history.

Or tradition.

Or good taste.

This is, yet again, not to say that the idiot can't do immense damage in service of his ego, nor to excuse the GOP in general for enabling him, but it's beyond him to come up with any "grand scheme" or code words.

ETA: I forgot a major one - movies featuring military equipment.

There are U.S. Park Police officers and National Park Service rangers at the site. The soldiers aren't out there alone. And they won't say whether their rifles, with mounted bayonets, are loaded, only that they are "fully functional." Even if they are not routinely loaded, I'll bet they have magazines close at hand.

He's not even trying to hide the fact that he wants to be dictator. Wearing military garb even though he's never served and actually avoided service....

It's Red Square on May Day. He'll need a Kremlin wall to stand on.

Perhaps Trump isn't actually a traitorous American after all -- perhaps he is actually a Russian all along! A Russian nesting doll, in fact! Inside of the outer Trump shell is an obese syphilitic hippopotamus, and inside that obese syphilitic hippopotamus is a gigantic sack of rotting feces, and inside the sack of rotting feces is a Russian dung beetle on Putin's payroll! Good heavens, and until now I've been almost unkind about Trump. I shall be kinder from now on, and wish Trump nothing but the same love, admiration, and respect that Nicolai Ceausescu's people showed him at the end of his career.

The French have national service, hence they have plenty of spare people to waste their time preparing for the annual parade while the real soldiers get on with what real soldiers do.

The US military don't, and will therefore probably see this as a waste of their time.
No they don't. Not since the 1996

Well, the Queen has a parade for her birthday every year.

And the Guards parade from the Wellington Barrack to Buckingham palace and St James's Palace every day and the Cavalry from Hyde Park Barrack to Horse Guards.

Does that count.

Soldiers on horses, armed with swords, protected with shiny metal breast plates is the sort of military technology that will impress enemies and deter invaders. If the horse guards are not sufficient almost certainly the fly past by a Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster will do the job. I am told that shortly we may have a Mosquito; that sort of fast fighter bomber will certainly do the job.

I know that it's fashionable for "leftists" like me to make fun of President Trump and to get our knickers in a twist about his antics but while I don't think that his calling for a huge parade to display the US's military might is a threat to democracy, or even the most unreasonable thing he did that day, I do think it's yet another deliberate distraction from matters of actual import.

IMO there is one way to really get under Donald Trump's skin, and that's to ignore him and focus on the thing(s) that you want to focus on. If the key focus should be Russia and/or the impending shut down then simply ignore all the other **** and leave dealing with that to Stephen Colbert et al.

Huge Military parade..his imitation of Hitler, authoritarian Russian leaders ,and the dictator of various Banana Republic will be complete.
It will spark massive counter demonstrations with probably violence.
As for the military, they HATE what they call "Dog and Pony Shows"..useless parades and demonstrations done to try to impress politicians. They consider it a waste to time and money better spent on actual training.
This has nothing in common with the parades at the end of the Civil War and those at the end of the Two World Wars...those were to honor the soldiers who had just won the war. This is only to satisfy Trump's huge ego. And the optics of the President looking like the El Presdendente of a authoritarian Third World dictatorship will be terrible.

He should have one of those broad ribbons that goes over the shoulder and across the front and back. Hang lots of big, glorious medals on it. And give him a riding crop to complete the image.
