Trump, the republicans and the political right-wing after a mass shooting:

"This is not the time to discuss gun control so soon after a tragedy".

Trump, the republicans and the political right-wing after an incident involving illegal immigrants:

"We must act now!"

At least Trump is cribbing his propaganda from the masters.

Trump's speech about how great the economy was while the Stock Market was taking one of the worst nose drives in it's history is his best Baghdad Bob moment yet.

Don't worry, he'll handle the stock market dropping just as well as the way he's handling the trade deficit.

From: https://www.marketwatch.com/story/u...oars-to-9-year-high-of-566-billion-2018-02-06
The U.S. trade deficit in December and for the full year both rose to the highest levels since 2008...

A declining stock market would tend to result in lower capital inflows because US investors become more likely to invest abroad and foreign investors become less likely to invest in the US. Since balance of payments sum to zero, reduced capital inflow to the US also forces the balance of trade to decline, so in a round about way he’s “fixing” the trade balance by crashing the stock market.

German Karneval is approaching. Among the vehicles to be seen on Mainz' streets next Monday is this one:

That's an attempt at a tu quoque fallacy, but then again President Trump wasn't in the audience for Obama's SOTUs so we have no idea whether or not he would have cheered Obama to the rafters so it's a double-fail :p

Then again, a few years ago Donald Trump was seriously questioning Obama's location of birth and so may have thought that Obama was not legitimately the President and judged his SOTU reaction accordingly.

IOW, IMO it makes no odds whatsoever how Republicans have behaved in the SOTU in the past whether to judge that failing to applaud the President sufficiently during the SOTU is treason. Personally I think that President Trump is being completely ridiculous and once again is cheapening the Presidency and behaving like a spoilt child.

A bit behind, so pardon me if I'm late in line here too, but I quite disagree here. It would be a tu quoque fallacy if the question were whether or not the behavior is right or wrong. But the issue here is the character of those making the statement and those now hypocritically letting it pass un-denounced. One can hardly accuse someone of being a hypocrite without reference to what he's being hypocritical about.

Another step along the way.

Trump’s ‘marching orders’ to the Pentagon: Plan a grand military parade

President Trump’s vision of soldiers marching and tanks rolling down the boulevards of Washington is moving closer to reality in the Pentagon and White House, where officials say they have begun to plan a grand military parade later this year showcasing the might of America’s armed forces.

Trump has long mused publicly and privately about wanting such a parade, but a Jan. 18 meeting between Trump and top generals in the Pentagon’s tank — a room reserved for top-secret discussions — marked a tipping point, according to two officials briefed on the planning.

Surrounded by the military’s highest-ranking officials, including Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., Trump’s seemingly abstract desire for a parade was suddenly heard as a presidential directive, the officials said.

A military parade? Geez, some ExtenZe would be so much cheaper and easier. Where's Jimmy Johnson when you need him?

Huge Military parade..his imitation of Hitler, authoritarian Russian leaders ,and the dictator of various Banana Republic will be complete.
It will spark massive counter demonstrations with probably violence.
As for the military, they HATE what they call "Dog and Pony Shows"..useless parades and demonstrations done to try to impress politicians. They consider it a waste to time and money better spent on actual training.
This has nothing in common with the parades at the end of the Civil War and those at the end of the Two World Wars...those were to honor the soldiers who had just won the war. This is only to satisfy Trump's huge ego. And the optics of the President looking like the El Presdendente of a authoritarian Third World dictatorship will be terrible.

The only time we had massive military parades in the past was at the end of a war as a sort of Welcome Home to the Veterens. For no reason at all is contrary to American tradition..and that includes American Military Tradition.
What amazes me is Trump's inability to get that he should avoid anything that makes him look like a dictator wannabe.

How many Western countries does it take to have military parades before we stop making dictators our comparison?

When I first heard the idea, I was trying to concoct a way to get there and protest. The idea that it could inadvertently be a 100th anniversary of armistice day touched my heart. I always felt we ignore the lessons of the great war to our peril.

But yeah, real banana republic stuff here.

Well, the Queen has a parade for her birthday every year.

And the Guards parade from the Wellington Barrack to Buckingham palace and St James's Palace every day and the Cavalry from Hyde Park Barrack to Horse Guards.

Does that count.

Does the number of western countries falling into this sort of jingoistic trap make it better?

We have a tradition of Not Having Annual Show of Force Day. Donnie Johnny is a man-child and like his "Vroom! Vroom!" moment in the big truck, this is a childish thing.

Will he have a nice uniform made. After all he is Commander in Chief.

Heck, yeah. He's already got a Purple Heart (that he got "the easy way"). We just need a couple of rows of fruit salad - the real thing, not the euphemism - and the Order of The Yellow Streak of Bone Spurs. Perhaps Sheriff Dave of the Duchy of Wisconsin could give him some pointers on the shiny bits.
