President Trump: It will be hard to unite the country without a "major event"

The anti-Trump faction of the paranoid conspiracy theorists are sounding the horn on this:

Trump spoke about creating a more united country during a lunch with a number of television news anchors. Trump said the United States has long been divided, including during the impeachment of former president Bill Clinton. Trump also said that Americans usually come together during times of suffering.

“I would love to be able to bring back our country into a great form of unity,” Trump said. “Without a major event where people pull together, that’s hard to do. But I would like to do it without that major event because usually that major event is not a good thing.”

Except his comments aren't about being a great war POTUS. They're about unifying Americans. And he doesn't really need to do that. Especially not if it means going to all the effort of starting some "major event" just for that purpose.

The gist of his comments are that it would be nice, but he's not going to bother trying to make it happen.

This little 'pensiveness' on Trump's part is borne purely out of the cold claw of fear gripping that major part of his brain concerned with preservation of the self. It seeks to find a way out of its predicament, and is preparing the ground for that very "major" event coming into focus among the fevered imaginings. Wag the dog, indeed.

At least that's what my first impulse tells me: guard against the worst possibility. Such an amoral, self-centered person in his desperation could too easily and recklessly cross the Rubicon in any number of ways.
