Australian of the Year is........a Quantum Physicist

Every Australia Day this award has been given. There are far too many sportspeople, a country and western singer and, to our eternal shame, con man, thief and jail bird Alan Bond.

But last year it went to a Biomedical Scientist and this year to Michelle Simmons.

Michelle Yvonne Simmons (born 14 July 1967) is a Scientia Professor of Quantum Physics in the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales and has twice been an Australian Research Council Federation Fellow and is now an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow. She is the Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation & Communication Technology [1] and is recognised internationally as a pioneer in atomic electronics and quantum computing.[2] She is also editor-in-chief of npj Quantum Information, an academic journal publishing articles in the emerging field of quantum information science.[3] On 25 January 2018, Michelle Simmons was named as the 2018 Australian of the Year for her work and dedication to quantum information science.[4

that sounds like the work that you need to get quantum computing from a theoretical exercise on paper to practical application.

One can actually use quantum computers at the moment. IBM has one on the internet, that you can write programs for.
