The Trump Presidency (Act V - The One Where Everybody Dies)

Yes, but in a state where Republicans normally win by twenty points.

I'm going to be real curious about states that are much more evenly split like Arizona and Texas.

I suspect that the GOP will try to field candidates who are not alleged child molesters in those states.

Heh. Schumer offers Trump the wall in exchange for DACA, Trump bites but then changes his mind and asks for more stuff. Schumer takes the wall off the table. Trump wants backsies and offers Schumer's original deal.

World class negotiation at work, folks.

Don't worry, this seems to be GOP standard operating practice and unfortunately it seems to work. Another couple of iterations and the GOP position will have changed enough that reverting to these conditions will be portrayed as a major "win" by the Democratic Party

The alternative, another shutdown, runs the risk that the Democratic Party will be blamed for the next one - in which case the GOP will have little or no incentive to deal.

The White House has outlined an immigration plan that would allow 1.8 million people to become US citizens in exchange for funding of a border wall.

The framework was described by a senior Trump aide in a conference call to Republicans ahead of legislative negotiations with Democrats.

The proposed bill, to be unveiled on Monday, requests $25bn (£17.6bn) in funds for a wall on the Mexican border.

From the linked article:

The details emerged in a conference call on Thursday between White House policy chief Stephen Miller and Republican congressional aides, according to US media.

Mr Miller reportedly described the White House plan as a "dramatic concession".

If someone like Stephen Miller describes it as a dramatic concession then the one thing it absolutely isn't is a dramatic concession. Stephen Miller is an avowed white supremacist and IMO wouldn't propose anything other than less that the bare minimum when it comes to immigration.

..to be admitted legally and naturalized as a U.S. citizen is already a privilege that most people in the world can only dream of.

I think you might be reaching somewhere here :) I'm sure becoming a US citizen is a dream for many people, but most? I don't think so.

I did dream about it. Then I woke up screaming. Took literally seconds to calm down.

Nobody I know wants to be become a U.S. citizen. And apparently most Norwegians have no desire to settle in the USA permanently. Even the Cubans I know who wouldn't mind a change of scenery mention Canada or Europe rather than the USA.

Don't be silly :p

It's a matter of faith that everybody loves the United States and really wants to live there. Even those people and countries that claim that they don't secretly do, but won't admit it.

I know quite a few people who immigrated and became citizens here. Mostly, they're divided between poorer people from Central America who want to get the hell away from the remarkable violence in their own countries, and high-skill Africans who are going into specific, high- need fields in the US. Note that I've always lived on the east coast, I imagine that many Asian immigrants would end up on the west coast instead just because they're closer.

But immigrants from Canada or Europe? Never met one who was under 50. That's the big irony here - you've got Ryan sobbing on one hand that we can't fund retirement because people aren't having enough kids, and on the other about these awful young immigrants, and how we can't possibly help people pay for college/childcare/etc. The GOP, even here, is in theory stepping on their own feet - if you take them at their word.

I don't, though, since they clearly want to just shovel as much money to the ultra-rich as they can.

Well, he's not avowed, he'll deny it even as he rants about how awful the darkies are. Only the foolish are fooled, of course, since he's plainly a white nationalist...

Sloppy phrasing. I meant most people can't move here, not that most would want to. And the number who would want to seems to be declining by the day.

Maybe he meant white kids.

That's an argument against immigration: if we naturalize immigrants, then they become Americans and therefore more murderous.

I think the odds of my prediction that we would be in the worst Consitutional Crisis since Watergate before the end of the year being right just went up dramatically.
