Cont: The Trump Presidency Part IV

Same thing with the Access Hollywood tape, as if people were just upset about the "locker room" words that he used to describe his sexual assaults.

His choice of language actually did seem to cause more outrage amongst a significant proportion of the electorate.

This is an aside, but...

It's worth pointing out that the Pentagon was built in IIRC the 1940s, and for that reason alone was far less expensive than most modern buildings - when you AC consists of "Open a window.", you're going to save a lot compared to more modern centralized HVAC designs. The entire building was essentially gutted and refurbished in more recent years to address this and many other modernization issues, making the initial price pretty much meaningless as far as direct comparison goes.

Also, I can't even imagine the price DoD would want to spend on a new headquarters located anywhere close to DC. However, given the processes and requirements in place today, I'm guessing the price would dwarf that of the new embassy in London, and would likely be what many would call a "boondoggle":D .

Not an attack on you, but I think it's worth pointing these matters out if you're going to make a comparison.

Sure, but it is also 6.5 million sq. ft.

Between 1994 and 2011, $4.5 billion was spent on renovations to the Pentagon. Repairs after 9/11 cost $500 million.

And in seventy years or so we'll be able to compare how much gets spent on renovations and upgrades at the new embassy.

Like I said, I don't know that $1 billion is an unreasonable sum, and I'm not trying to suggest that it is.

All I've said is that $1 billion is a substantial amount to spend on a building. Nowhere near the most, but still far from trivial.

Well, how do you distract the country from something like that?

Send an alarm about a nuke heading towards Hawaii.

One senator (I forget off the top of my head whom) tweeted that they thanked God that Trump was golfing at the time.

I'm not entirely sure that's accurate. I suspect that Trump cares about the population of Hawaii about as much as he does the population of Puerto Rico, and for the same reason.

I'm pretty sure he still thinks Hawaii is part of Kenya.

Notorious RINO. He couldn't get a nomination for dog catcher in a GOP primary these days.

Not according to the Washington Times Oct 19, 2016:

“Ex-presidents loom large in the 2016 presidential debates,” says Eric Ostermeier, a University of Minnesota political professor who is keeping a tally of White House icons. “Fourteen ex-presidents have been mentioned 109 times collectively this debate season with two former commanders in chief accounting for more than two-thirds of them. Any guesses?”
Reagan was the winner, mentioned 45 times, with George W. Bush in second place with 30 citations, some not always in a positive light.

Reagan is invoked so often by Republicans that I'm surprised he isn't referred to as St. Ronnie of Reagan.

I've already said in no uncertain terms that I have no opinion about whether or not the expense of the building is warranted, and was making no comment relating to that. I don't understand why you persist in responding as if I was being critical of the price. And I can only admire that someone was able to pay for a $1 billion dollar building with $481 million. Can't complain about that. :p

Five acres isn't all that impressive. The Pentagon has a five acre courtyard. Inside the building. The building itself adds another 28 acres to that.

I was merely providing some added information on how it was paid for and why it was so expensive. I didn't realize you were so touchy. I'll try not to make that mistake again.

The question to ask is does he have a property there such as a golf course, if the answer is no then yes his interest will be next to zero.... unless.... he's about to buy property or land!

That's dead Reagan of fond memory (only the dead can be sainted). I think the idea is that the centre has shifted so far since 1980 that a live Reagan would be regarded as a liberal. I'm not so sure myself, but who can be sure of anything on the US political scene these days. That said, Ronnie could have taken down Trump in the primaries with just a look and a smile and a "There you go again ...".

Fox has taken up the latest torch: Trump says not racism, just tough words (after denying he said "s-hole countries" failed  ). Fox News this morning is going with, libruls are upset a curse word was used, ignoring the racism issue altogether.
There is too much focus on the swear word, its the whole sentence that is the problem.
In the same way that it wasn't the word pussy that was the problem with his earlier stuff, it was the whole sentence.

Some people are upset with the cussing, some people see the whole sentence and are upset with the meaning.

There was a time when the Republicans and Democrats could actually work together and compromise because the distance between their ideologies wasn't so far apart. Sadly, the GOP hasn't merely shifted to the right, they've gone off the far-right cliff.

Both my parents were Republicans but later became Democrats post 1980 due to that far right change in course. They both voted for Reagan when he ran for governor of CA and I attended one of his rallies as a high schooler. And my father was a 20 year active duty Air Force officer.

Since you asked (and apparently don't know how to look it up yourself), "Barry" had 2 quarters in a row in excess of 4% in 2014.

That's right.*2014. Over two*years before*Trump*took office.

Explain to me how Obama's ******** in 2015 and 2016 is somehow responsible for*Trump's success in 2017. The U.S. economy was sputtering about like an old veedub during Barry's last 2 years leading up to the election. Must've been part of some DNC grand plan.

If "it's the economy stupid" is true and the common knowledge that the economy is the main factor in whether a President is elected or reelected holds water... that is sort of a problem.

The "Economy" is a mix of countless factors, many going back decades (or longer one could reasonably argue) almost none of which the President has any direct control over. At best he can wield a broad, inexact influence.

Congress, as in most things, actually has far, far more power than the President does when it comes to economics, but the President is a single position and Congress is a group position. The President is a single point of focus, for good or for ill, while you can easily talk yourself into the reason Congress sucking is "the other side messing it up."

This is why Congress has an approval rating somewhere below "Having to watch your worst enemy making sweet love to your best girl at your mothers funeral" while still having a 90+ re-election rate.
