A depressing words-and-video feature about the continuing catastrophe in Puerto Rico, where most people have been without electricity since the hurricane three months ago.
Puerto Rico’s apagón, or “super blackout,” is the longest and largest major power outage in modern U.S. history. Without electricity, there is no reliable source of clean water. School is out, indefinitely. Health care is fraught. Small businesses are faltering. The tasks of daily life are both exhausting and dangerous. There is nothing to do but wait, and no one can say when the lights will come back on.

There's a Puerto Rico thread here:

The current status for Puerto Rico is here:

Any other Administration would be ashamed of this kind of lack of reaction to millions of citizens being without basic utilities. OTOH the Trump Administration give themselves an A+ and blame brown people.

Shame on the Democratic Party for not bringing this up every single day. I realise US and UK politics are very different in every way but this would be brought up in every Prime Minister's Questions and would be seen to be damaging to the government. I suspect that among the GOP letting brown people down is actually a vote winner

I note parenthetically that the U.S. has nothing like Prime Minister's Questions. Trump rarely, if ever, even holds traditional press conferences.

Well yes, that is yet another feature of the system but he is head of state rather than the leader of the largest party so maybe he gets a pass from legislative questioning (though it'd be interesting to see McConnell having to spend half an hour a week fielding questions) but the lack of press conferences is problematic....

...were it not for the fact that he appears to inhabit a world of his own. Even if there was a Puerto Rico press conference, President Trump would merely repeat that his Administration have done an A+ job and any failures are down to brown people. :(

You don't know the half of it. Trump's advisors structure his national security briefings so as not to tell him anything that will piss him off, especially about Russia.

By now this is more of a U.S. political issue than an "aftermath of bad weather" discussion. This is happening because the Trumpets think PR is a foreign country.

I wish it was a U.S. political issue but to someone from the other side of the Atlantic it seems to be a no-one giving a single **** about it issue.

Where's the outrage though ?

Either the Democratic Party has dropped the ball or, worse, have realised that attempting to make a big deal out of Puerto Rico is actually a vote loser for them.

Probably both. Outside of New York City, many Americans think of PR as a foreign country. Democrats could imagine an election in a few months where the opponent says "This guy wants to send billions of your tax dollars off to the Caribbean. What's he doing for you at home?" PR doesn't have a vote in Congress, and Puerto Ricans don't vote for President. If the President doesn't do his job, the Democrats right now don't have any weight to throw.

Agreed. I don't think a solid majority of Americas really see Puerto Rico as any different from Haiti or whatnot; a 3rd world shanty town full of brown foreigners (The unfortunate implications of that not withstanding) that we have no responsibility to.

And since they don't get a vote for President and have only a symbolic representative in Congress, they are political wasted capital.

I wouldn't say that. They are still US citizens and are not allowed to vote for President only because of where they live. Well guess what? They don't have to live there!

I myself am getting a few calls a day from people who are moving out of PR, and I don't live in a state with a big Hispanic population. Guess where you can find a large number of Hispanics in the US. Texas and Florida! So a bunch of Puerto Ricans are moving out of Puerto Rico and into states with a lot of electoral votes. Do you think those people are going to be voting for Trump (assuming he lasts that long)?

Trump is going to lose Florida. He might be able to put Texas in play for the Democratic candidate. And he has no legal mechanism for deporting Puerto Ricans...

Puerto Rico is getting the same attention in the news as it is getting here at this forum. Even the views are low considering the age of this thread.

I have no idea how the two continental states that were hit by hurricanes are fairing either. Haven't seen a word anywhere. This month it was sexual harassment charges that were all the rage, sorry Texas and whatever that other state was. Now it's vans blocking CNN's view of Trump playing golf. We have more important things to worry about.

But the Congress needed to put all energies into rushing through a tax bill. What little gas they had left in the tank was used up fellating Trump.

tl;pr

Don't fall for the game.

Dolt 45 is a narcissist, he needs to be congratulated, among his many failings. Pence, Ryan, and the like are dealing with him, while putting forward their agenda - which is hurting poor people, making rich people even richer, and so on...

The ultimate answer is toi go for people that won't bow to this nonsense. Also, to vote next November - yeah, it's an off-year election, so what?

Power Is Restored to Most of U.S. Virgin Islands After Hurricanes, Officials Say

New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/09/...=WhatsNext&contentID=WhatsNext&pgtype=article

By PATRICIA MAZZEIJAN. 9, 2018

Months after two Category 5 hurricanes pummeled the United States Virgin Islands, officials said Tuesday that power has been restored to 92 percent of customers, a significant improvement from even a month ago, when about half of them remained in the dark.

Bringing power back up may help speed recovery in other areas that require basic infrastructure to operate, experts say, even as Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp estimated Tuesday that there was a long way to go after Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
