Cont: The Trump Presidency Part III

But that's the not issue. You said, this is the message the democrats should give. But it was exactly the message that Clinton had. And it didn't work. Because of all the things you said. It was completely ignored in favor of some distorted version.

Exactly ! And unfortunately the explanation about why it was a distorted version necessarily had to run longer than a single soundbite or tweet and it contained messages that people didn't want to hear (that they would have to retrain and/or move to get a good job and that nothing was guaranteed).

OTOH "Hillary kills coal", "Trump digs coal" and "You can have your job back" are easily consumed because they are short and what people want to hear :(

You want to be delusional and won't accept reality. Not much can be done for you. There have always been people like you and fortunately in the past there have been enough who shake off the delusions to stop the march off the abyss into oblivion. You should thank those who can handle reality because without them this country has no future but you won't.

.....and now you're being insulting and patronising (to hypothetical Trump-supporting me). :(

That kind of "tough love" is fine if the group you're talking to is electorally irrelevant. The trouble is that the Trump core is 25%-30% of the electorate and in the rust belt and bible belt includes many traditional Democratic Party supporters.

It's not impossible to overcome, you can provide a candidate who is sufficiently inspiring/attractive to encourage people to turn out who would otherwise not have voted to replace those you have lost to Trump (without scaring off the rest of your support) in those swing states. Sadly (IMO) Hillary was not that candidate and IMO neither was Bernie (I think he may have scared off too many Democratic leaning centreists who may not have voted Trump but would not have turned out - though we'll never know). I'm not close enough to US politics to know whether there is a young inspiring candidate out there (in the UK they seem to be absent).

What majority are you thinking about? Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by three million votes. She's not president because she won those votes in the wrong states and Trump got the electoral college.

Large minority != majority, I think you misread phiwum

Yeah, it's tough. The fact is that a large minority was hoodwinked and doesn't want to admit it.

Dems need a Steve Bannon and an appetite for fighting dirty. But right now, no. Stay the course, look for and run strong candidates in the midterms. Use any tactic possible to split conservative votes. (That's were a Bannon might be helpful.)

My sense is that by attrition he is slowly losing support from people who are beginning to see that he hasn't been very effective. I think Dems have been doing a pretty good job so far of not jumping on every stupid thing Trump says. Keep letting his mouth work against him.

Do not patronize. If coal miners ask if they're going to get their jobs back say, "I don't know." They don't need to be told they may have been bamboozled.

Is DeVos a goner?

It seemed probable yesterday she's on her way out.
Not quite a done deal, but likely she'll resign soon.

Thought I'd see mention of it here... did I miss it? Or misread the tea leaves?

And any chance she can be chained to about 27 of her admin compatriots... drag them out with her? :p

Well, you can't embarrass the President and hope to keep your position.

I think they might benefit from someone else saying that, though. Don't say "you've been bamboozled," find a photogenic moderate* conservative to say "I was bamboozled," for them to project their own feelings onto.

*Everyone's a moderate in their own minds.

I said "large minority". I didn't say "majority".

Despite Mueller's indictments, Donald Trump's approval ratings are up :(

http://news.gallup.com/poll/203198/presidential-approval-ratings-donald-trump.aspx

Up from 35% to 38% overall

Up to 83% with Republicans - his highest since July, up to 35% among independents, joint highest since June :(
He's traveling... doesn't he usually get a bump when he's overseas?

Personally... I just think he's more attractive* from a distance. [emoji14]

(* Relatively speaking, of course. ;) )

Went to see Monty Python and the Holy Grail last night.
John Cleese was there and he was taking questions after the movie.

Best question of the night for John Cleese: Which weighs more, Kellyanne Conway or a duck?

According to the A- rated Ipsos poll, his approval is steady at 36%, while his disapproval spiked during the period for the indictments to 61% and then dipped back to 59%.

His approval rating with independents is down to 33% after a spike at 40%.

Carrier deal continues to get worse.

Carrier Corp., the HVAC manufacturer that had planned to move its operations to Mexico before President Trump staged a much-heralded intervention, said Tuesday it is gearing up for yet another round of layoffs.

Less than four months after it laid off nearly 340 employees at its Indianapolis factory, Carrier announced that 215 more employees will be terminated on Jan. 11.

The company said in a statement that it had originally planned to lay off 275 employees on Dec. 22, but decided to reduce the size of the layoff and delay the timing because of voluntary employee attrition.

Employees at the Indianapolis plant reportedly do not feel they have job security.

Johnstown Never Believed Trump Would Help. They Still Love Him Anyway.
In a depressed former steel town, the president’s promises don’t matter as much as they once did.

The simple fact of the matter is that any (most?) people prefer politicians who hate the same people they do. Actual accomplishments are irrelevant so long as you say the right things. It's why con men like the prosperity gospel preachers make millions off a religion based on poverty.

We are, at our core, tribal ********, and people will gravitate towards the ******* who makes the right grunting noises about the other tribes. Trump has proven you can rely upon the unwavering support of at least 30% of the US population by going on hate alone.
