Whether it's a book on morality or not doesn't answer whether you think it's morally right or wrong. It's supposed to be the word of god. It contains instructions. Are those instructions morally acceptable or not?

An entire town angry and afraid of you is certainly not an indicator that it's you who should be seeking their forgiveness. Reaching for war clubs and cowering in fear, seething in rage are a sure bet that they're ready to bury the hatchet.

Nope. You are still under it. You are a human being remember. The law is for them. They are not good and need it to know how to life the "good" life. They try but never to fully succeed. Gods are good from within. They have the Life of Jesus and are living that Life. This obviously only became a possibility with the arrival of Jesus.
