Merged Trump Pardons Arpaio

Has anyone ever wondered what good the pardoning power of the President is? What was it installed for in the first place?

Many other countries don't have it, for obvious reasons. Pardon powers are for kings, not for heads of the executive branch of government.

A president is the democratic equivalent (or analogue) of a king. My historical and philosophical understanding is that the ability to pardon exists because occasionally the judicial system results in miscarriages of justice due to previously unforeseen circumstances and/or how laws are worded. There are frequently limitations on how lenient the judiciary can be in a given set of circumstances.

Like the power of veto is the check against legislative error, the pardon is the check against judicial error. That the power to pardon has been misused (many times, mainly for political purposes) is unfortunate, but it's useful when real injustice occurs. Frankly, it hasn't been used enough, especially in a backwards nation that still executes its citizens.

And Trump has rescinded the Obama controls on police getting US surplus military equipment, and had ridiculed the idea that heavily armed police might make a situation worse.
Having spat on the Hispanics Friday, he spits on Afro Americans today. His bigotry is now clear for all to see.

I so want the rumored video of him using the "N" word on "Celebrity Apprentice" to get leaked. The timing right now would be so perfect.

When Don John said he will be the law and order president, he meant he will dictate what is law and order.

The power of presidential pardon just seems weird. I don't see the point of it at all beyond an extremely dodgy 'oh, he's a friend of mine and I'm the pres, let him out', one rule for the rich, another for the poor type way.

What am I missing?

Arpaio is upset that people view his racial profiling as racist.

“He was extremely distressed with the mischaracterization of the conviction,” Goldman said. “It was extremely hurtful and upsetting to him that it was being reported that he was convicted of racial profiling."
Aww. Poor widdle Conservative Snowflake Arpaio had his feelings hurt.

I just wish they could have been hurt while he was sitting wearing pink underwear in a tent city jail in 120°F heat.

I wonder how upsetting he would have found that?

Racists get upset when called racist.

I walked through a hypothetical conversation on here a while ago that started with the premise of person X being a racist, continued with me hypothetically calling the racist a racist and then someone asked why I was being mean to the hypothetical racist.

I was in another thread where a poster equated two statements as equally racist:
  • half of white Americans are racist
  • black people are lazy

When I pointed out that the former statement is statistical fact, versus, the latter statement is unsupported prejudice, he got offended and had to go through hoops to rationalize it.

Specifically, apparently, the statement "I don't want my daughter to marry a negro," is not "racist" - it's just "common sense."

This is how we get to this situation: to some people, the racial stereotypes are so real, that they cease being prejudice, they are treated as ordinary facts. As such, there's a paradigm problem, it's not a discussion about, say, respect for the constitution or rule of law.

This always reminds me of someone I met many years ago from Louisiana. In one sentence he would say he is not racist nor is anyone in Louisiana. In the next sentence, he would talk about how it was inappropriate for a white woman to date an African American and go so far as to scold a couple publicly for being together.

Only racism if the reason is because one is superior to the other.
