Ed Dueling protests spark state of emergency in Virginia.

Consider how many times conservative speakers have been shut down by violence: Look up Ben Shapiro, Milo Yiannopoulos, Ann Coulter, Charles Murray. Hell, even Donald Trump has had campaign rallies shut down through the use of violence. Now ask yourself how many leftist speakers or rallies have been disrupted by counter-protesters on the right.

So no evidence then, just vague arm waving and reference to anecdotes ?

Donald Trump advocates violence against his opponents, so not a good example of "leftist" political violence.

I guess I have learned at least one thing today. And it's only 10am. I feel blessed that the "E" in JREF still stands for education.

What somebody else's poor understanding of fascism doesn't actually alter my understanding. Part of education is identifying irrelevant information.

Look at sunmaster14 making excuses for Nazis.

What does the '14' in your username stand for?

Would you want a list of leftist political violence?

I do not feel it necessary to criticize the neo-Nazis to establish my anti-Nazi bona fides. That others do is their business.
I remember having a very similar conversation with you about Trump during the primaries. You claimed not to like him, but unlike all of the other candidates you would go out of your way to avoid saying anything even remotely bad about him or criticizing his gaffes directly.

There are ways of confirming (to an acceptable level of confidence) what one reads in the news. One way is to search out an independent source for the same claims. Another is to read between the lines, so to speak, and think about how the reporter may be spinning the testimony of eyewitnesses. Also, you can critically examine available video. For example, there are claims that the white nationalist who killed Heather Heyer was simply panicking in response to having his car surrounded by violent protesters. The video shows that such claims are ridiculous, as the car was clearly speeding into a densely packed crowd from an area where there were only scattered protesters (amongst other pertinent evidence).

Your first and last points are indeed useful methods, one's I hope most people use. However, the middle one, reading between the lines, is particularly subject to the bias of the reader.

He has made no qualms about backing Trump because it serves his interest. That isn't the same as liking someone.

My guess is that roughly 10% or less of self-described anti-fascists have anything resembling that definition in mind, much less are they able to articulate it. Furthermore, I think there are probably a goodly number of self-described anti-fascists whose political ideology fits that definition.

This is why I missed you so much. The coherence of your arguments and the reliance on facts and data.

Of particular interest:
Marilyn Mayo, senior research fellow for the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism, said that statistics show that radical leftists have been dramatically less likely to kill people than their counterparts on the opposite side of the political spectrum. Over the past decade, extremists of every stripe have killed 372 Americans. 74 percent of those killings were committed by right wing extremists. Only 2 percent of those deaths were at the hands of left wing extremists.

Ideally I'd want an independent source of statistical information and/or a reputable academic article which looks at political violence in the US.

Last nine years, 63 cases of Islamist domestic terrorism, 19 cases of left wing domestic terrorism, and 115 cases of right wing domestic terrorism (data including foiled plots).

Yeah, it's the left that are violent.

The attempt by the right to focus this discussion on Anti-fa is a pretty transparent distraction. Classic approach too: instead of defending the indefensible turn the discussion around, find a questionable minor radical group among the opposition, and make the opposition defend them. Look: the Nazis have become the victims! Amazing slight of hand magic, isn't it.

The Nazis used this concept while gaining power in Germany, so it is none too original.
