I have to disagree there. Mattis statements are pretty much in line with the way the Obama Admin talked to Korea. Totally different then Trump's rant.

The real danger with NK this time is that in previous crises you could assume that there was only a crazy person running things in Pyongyang. Now we have two unstable, paranoid, egotists facing off and things could turn nasty very quickly.

Sadly not.

I suppose the point about such public executions is instilling fear.

Having a volatile temper seems to make sense if you are acting as a controlling bully - whether in an abusive relationship or as a dictator.

Unlike classic good-practice for discipline, you *don't* want clear boundaries, you want people to be unsure whether they have crossed any threshold.

I would be surprised if they weren't off the cuff. That would mean that he asked someone else about a tweet before he tweeted it. Not likely.

He does not need to be crazy to be evil.

Assuming that having grown up in family conditions I can only imagine were not conducive to emerging as a rational, sane human being, that Kim Jong Un is not crazy then you have the problem that he may conclude that Trump is engaging in the same sort of propaganda speak he is using, not understanding that Trump seems to actually believe his own nonsense. The best hope for the world is that Trump goes into one of his bursts of denial and pretends none of this ever happened.
