Erdogan mission to become sultan over Turkey nears completion

Well, it's a done deal. Actually, it's been done for almost a month now.

In a signal that Turkey faces indefinite rule by decree, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Sunday that a state of emergency, introduced as a temporary measure after last year’s failed coup, would continue until the country achieved “welfare and peace.”
Despite international criticism of these measures, Mr. Erdogan said on Sunday that the state of emergency “will not be lifted,” according to Anadolu Agency, a state-owned news wire. “Until when? Until the situation reaches welfare and peace.”

As dudalb posted, a classic dictatorial move. "Welfare and peace." I guess I have to do my part and help achieve some. Something tells me it won't happen anytime soon, if ever. At least not until the next national elections, which I'm sure will be as fair as the recent referendum vote.
Mission completed.

Yay.

Since Turkey is facing a constant state of near civil war with the Kurds, this indeed means a permanent state of emergency. Turkey has gone down the rabbit hole for the foreseeable future.

Erdogan might do well to check what was one of the key demands of protests at the start of the Syrian civil war. Turkey is headed in the same direction.

And things are going steadily downhill:

Passions flare as Turkey excludes evolution from textbooks
On Wednesday, the head of the education ministry's curriculum board Alpaslan Durmuş announced that a section on Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution would be excluded from biology textbooks in the ninth grade (14 and 15 year olds) from next year on.
Students are "too young to understand 'controversial subjects'", he said, adding that the topic will be delayed until undergraduate study.

Apparently the Turkish ministry of education has decided that the evolution theory would not be taught in schools as from 2019.

I guess that the sales in Turkey of Adnan Oktar’s book “The Atlas of Creation” will increase in the years to come…

17 journalists of the oldest Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet face since yesterday a trial under charges of being members of terrorist networks.

Could you link news like these to an English-languague media outlet, or at least a Granslate page? I'd love to read more on these antics.

Thanks :)

Snap elections are coming on June 24. The constitutional changes that were passed in the last vote will go into effect. Basically, the office of Prime Minister will be abolished and be replaced by an executive presidency. The President will have sweeping powers to appoint judges and to pass laws by decree.
Erdoğan is almost certainly going to win. He says them all for early elections is because of the situation with Syria, but it has more to do with the economy. The lira has been very weak lately, plus there is high inflation. He wants to have elections before the economy really tanks in the next year or so.
As for the election itself, I don’t think it will be close to free and fair.

Is this election for President or for Padişah?

I think the two are interchangeable for Erdoğan. Have you seen where he lives? The Ak Saray (White Palace) was opened in 2014 with an estimated £500 million price tag. 250 of the 1100 rooms are for the exclusive use of Erdoğan and his family. This in a country with an average annual household disposable income of about 19,500 TL, about $5000. A lot of people get by on much less than that. However, Erdoğan’s base is the poor and religious. They love him, see him as one of their own. Sound familiar?
Nothing would make me happier than seeing him leave that palace. Not gonna happen though. Then again, we live in a world where an orange man child has control of a few thousand nuclear bombs. Anything is possible I guess.

JESUS  I just looked at some pictures of Ak Saray. Um... Wow.

Fetocu olmalısın.

I don't like Adolf Erdogan's admiration for Hitler and his pro-Nazi attitude. It's very unfair on the Kurds who are now being abandoned to their fate, after fighting and defeating Isis almost single-handedly. Turkey is not a reliable ally:

Turkey’s social media, one of the few unregulated sources of news in Erdogan’s government, immediately went into high gear, according to the New York Times:

“Let’s do a close comparison between Hitler and Erdogan,” one person wrote on Twitter. “The only difference is that Hitler was a bit shorter.” People also shared a Photoshopped picture of Hitler with Mr. Erdogan’s face superimposed on it.

I guess we can look forward to another round of shenanigans with Erdogan and his cronies trying to rally up the vote among Turks living abroad. Especially in the Netherlands; after the incident in March last year, diplomatic relations have been broken off and have not yet been restored.

I think Erdogan visited Britain recently, which did not get much publicity, apart from a photo of an unsmiling Erdogan posing with some Turkish premier league footballers.

Some German premier league footballers with Turkish background, to be precise. Got much publicity here, at least more than his stated outrage over the Israeli "massacre" in Gaza. Well, being the butcher of Kurds, maybe the latter doesn't deserve much publicity, or only as an example of hypocrisy. But as our "Western" leaders prefer to keep their cowardly mouths shut, you don't even get that.

That's why proto-dictators always want 6 year terms, more if they can make it. If the election were held next year Erdogan could run into severe headwinds as his mismanagement of the country started to show effects. If he wins - and I agree he probably will - he will have about five years to do something about it, or at least prepare for the spending spree in the year before the elections. You can't do this in a four year cycle, five years is the bare minimum.

I hope he loses or else that the election is so close and so obviously rigged something else of note happens. A stroke before the elections would be fine too.
