CNN Doxxes a gif maker

This is the key observation here. Many people seem to believe that journalists owe HanA**holeSolo a duty of confidentiality, because . . . memes are sacred or something. Certainly they haven't been able to cite anything from the canons of journalistic ethics on point, which makes me wonder why they expect to persuade anyone from that profession.
I wonder about some people as well.

What happens in social media stays in social media for all to see should they look. Who doesn't know that in 2017?

Has anyone made a good argument that we generally owe reddit users (or anyone else) a duty to protect their real names from being linked with their pseudonyms? If so, I'd like to see what the argument looks like.
Reddit may have such a duty if they promise it, but we're all responsible for the faith we put in promises made.

The way some people present it, nobody else was covering Trump's tweet, and CNN isn't covering anything but.
Right. I was going for the middle ground, pretty much, and not really knowing when CNN should have called off the dogs. When you're a reporter you don't necessarily think of yourself as being part of some huge media machine. Given the circulation of the last newspaper I worked at some guy on a sub-sub-sub-Reddit might have been on essentially an equal footing ;).

It is a crap video, as I see it.
Juvenile bollocks.
That is all.
I admit I do not live in the land of the free.
But really?

You have it right. It wasn't a big deal here either - just something to squabble about until the real news picked up.

Stupid to say they reserved the right because they have the right; no need to reserve it.
I detect the presence of lawyers. CNN were recently burned by reporters not following procedure, which would include running the story past the legal eagles, and they will have leveraged that. Being lawyers.

The implications of that are much more worrying than the fate of Hanswhatsit, in my opinion.

So the original CNN story (as far as I know) did not cite Mr. Hole's safety as a concern. Then CNN issues a statement that cites Mr. Hole's safety as a concern. That really does sound to me like someone from CNN PR saying to News, "Give us a statement we can release to BuzzFeed so they can release it to Newsweek." (Or whatever). Things get garbled.
Lawyers and PR : that really does sound like CNN on the defensive.

Guy spreads offensive memes anonymously. Under cover of anonymity, claims ownership of CNN meme. Humbly refuses to take credit for his anti-Semitic and racist posts. Hero!
If you believe the guy, he was role-playing and isn't like that at all. I find that credible - peculiar, but I doubt he expected fame. Let alone infamy.

Who would judge a Tweet?
Who the Twitter?

Who wants that role?
Be wary of any

But CNN suppressing free speech!

A crap video tweeted by the President of the US, making it an official White House statement (for what that's worth) and globally newsworthy. Silly I know, but that's life, and said President wouldn't have it any other way, let's face it.

Why the story has generated twenty-odd pages here in a couple of days is anybody's guess. I'm thinking the void left by Obama and Hilary Clinton in some people's lives has been filled by CNN. Same derangement disorder, different target.

Funny little story - a few years back, one of the podcasts I listened to had a low-ranking wannabe-rival release a couple of podcasts where the self-styled rival insulted his wife, insulted him, used a *lot* of slurs, and generally acted like a white supremacist.

Turns out, an easy search revealed this guy's name, his location, and his employer - which had a record of him as a youth director - yes, with kids of various races.

Now, I'd argue that he had an obligation to contact the employer, with a nice polite email. You can see it as revenge, but regardless, there's enough there that any reasonable employer would ask questions of this employee. And the first podcaster agreed.

The "rival" is apparently still employed, but his podcast was gone very quickly. I'd guess that the employer had an interesting meeting with his youth director as well, since the "rival's" podcast was erased as much as possible soon after.

(And for reference, I'd say the same is also right if the "rival" were playing/were bigoted against any other group, as well.)

You are in good company with that opinion. Just watched this weeks Beat The Press, a Boston area show that critiques the media, all five journalists on the panel said the same thing.

Thanks for posting, I really appreciate insight from those with expertise in the profession.

Your immediate horizon is too occupied by your editor, and your passion by hatred of the subs who routinely violate your deathless prose to make it fit the ads.

Amen brother, the thread count does get up there when people show up to whine about the thread. Take a gander at post 869 for an instance. Yikes, amiright?

Solid contribution otherwise, tho.

The fact that people are still referring to (presumably) him as " HAS" is a pretty clear indication that there has been no doxxing.

Fake News, move along.

I have posted three links that says otherwise, and the fact that CNN has not released his name shows:

EXTORTION WORKS.

I think too much has been made of that silly gif. It was celebratory, not a call to arms. Incidentally, wrestling is fake.
Yes it's silly. But that just demeans the present POTUS in using it to make a ridiculous point. Politicians (and more especially Heads-of-State) are supposed to be more demure and considered, otherwise unintended consequences come into play.

They haven't released his name, so no doxxing. Neither you nor I have any idea who this clown is.

Sorry, no doxxing. Fake news.

HanA**holeSolo should go ahead and out himself now. Stand behind his work, proudly. Klan is hiring.
