Let's say Colin Powell decides to run as a Republican in 2000 (And convinces his wife to support him*), and wins in a landslide against Gore.

What would his presidency be like?

*he claims that the only reason he didn't run was because his wife threatened to leave him.

I have no idea. I like the way Powell carries himself. He's smart and respected but I don't have a clue what his positions are on domestic policies.

I think the fact that the GOP would have the first black president would preclude the GOP going to crazytown.

I'd probably have voted for him, for a starter. And regardless of who won, the world might be a better place. But 9/11 would have happened anyhow, so all bets are off.

I can't provide a link, but I can recall reading that elders of both parties talked to Powell about heading their ticket. He would have looked like the grown-up against Gore or Bush. And it's at least possible to imagine that somebody as smart as Powell, with a career military background and combat experience, might have been more alarmed than Bush about the warnings that multiple authorities were generating about al Queda. He might have directed the FBI, the CIA, the NSA etc. to start talking to each other in time to stop 9/11. Maybe.

The one thing I'm certain of, if Colin Powell had been president on 9/11, we wouldn't be in an open ended war in Afghanistan now. That was the one thing he feared above all else when he was CJCS. We would have killed a bunch of people, broken their stuff and left.

A Powell Presidency would also have meant the GOP avoids the climate change denial crazytown.

I wanted Powell to run at the time; didn't care under what ticket. I think he would have been a good leader and I was interested in his positions on various policies. I expect I would have voted for him. He would have been one of the few recent presidents who seemed "presidential" to me, I suspect. It is an interesting what-if scenario.

Above all a Powell president would probably not have led to the invasion of Iraq and to the huge mess that ensued with effects that can still be felt today i the whole Middle-East...

Yeah, but would it have stopped the left from going crazytown?

At the start of 2000 the only ones that had been to crazytown were the Republicans over Clinton. Even with what many on the left believed was a stolen election, the Dems were still willing to work with Bush early on, and a lot of things were done with the support of people on both sides. The real partisanship didn't go full nuclear until Obama was elected and the Reps declared that they were going to try and block everything he wanted to do for the next 4-8 years.
