How long till Spicer gets the boot?

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the shakeup (if it happens) but the people in the media say Spicer lost them at his very first press briefing. This was the day after the inauguration. Spicer came out and ranted for about five minutes about the "fake news reports" about the small size of the Inauguration Day crowds, especially in comparison to the crowds Obama attracted. Then Spicer turned his back and stalked out without taking any questions.

Many of the journalists say, it's a two-way street. The one thing a press spokesperson can't do, if they want to keep a good relationship with the media, is lie and then refuse to back down when caught in that lie. They have to realize, especially the White House spokesperson, the media has an important role to play in a democracy. They are the eyes and ears of the citizenry and, despite all the media's faults, that is something most journalists take very seriously. If the White House press spokesperson doesn't take it seriously, there is going to be a basic conflict.

Over 1,700 Connecticut College students, alumni and faculty signed a letter sent to Sean Spicer this past February:
Dear Mr. Spicer:
We represent over 1,700 Connecticut College students and alumni from classes ranging between 1945 and 2020. We are asking you, a fellow alumnus, to respect the Honor Code pledge that binds our Connecticut College community:

... As the White House’s chief spokesperson, your repeated belittlement of and malice towards our constitutional right to a free press and your unwillingness to ground the Administration’s messaging in fact and truth greatly concern us. What we have heard from you in the White House press room fundamentally conflicts with the values of the Connecticut College community. Link

A governor of Connecticut once referred to Donald Trump as a dirtbag. I guess you could make the same accusation towards Spicer. He's a dirtbag.

It is impossible for Trump's press secretary to not be a dirtbag.

Surely Trump made Spicy go and give that briefing about the inauguration crowds.

I'm sure Trump told him what to say. I read an article about the press relations with Spicer, with some of the reporters who've been covering presidents for decades. One thing they pointed out was, Trump never schedules anything during the time period every day when the press briefing is being held. They all presume he's over in the West Wing watching it live on a monitor. Spicer also wears an earpiece and there are times during the press briefing where Spicer pauses and it's obvious he's getting updated. From who? ;)

I'd say he's a sellout. The world is full of them. In fact we all are to varying degrees. But he sold out to a dirt bag. Does that make him a dirtbag? If you came to that conclusion, you could say that about anyone who speaks for Trump. And I am not sure that is fair.

Who's going to want to work for these malicious fools?

Much of the internal blame has fallen to the communications operation, with Kushner and other top officials questioning why the small army of press staffers led by Spicer and Dubke took so long to forcefully defend the president’s decision and agree to a set of talking points that could withstand scrutiny, according to several White House officials.

Inside the West Wing, it became a running joke among some staffers that the answer to every question would be “Rosenstein,” referring to the deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein, who wrote a memo outlining a case for Comey’s ouster.

They joked about Rosenstein being a patsy.

Regardless of your feelings about Spicer, maybe we can agree on one thing. If he gets fired and at some point appears with McCarthy and Baldwin on SNL, he would be an instant legend. That would be epic. Instant vindication. :D

I think he's perfect for Trump. I'll be surprised if he's fired. The press may not like his combativeness but I'm pretty sure Trump does.

The press briefing is pointless anyhow, IMO. Twenty reporters (or however many) getting canned answers to canned questions. Spicer deflects negative attention away from Trump while the news story of the day becomes how Spicer handled the press briefing. That might be his undoing - however useful he might be for the administration, Trump's got to bristle that Spicer is on TV more than he is and gets lampooned probably as often as Trump himself.

I agree with the Washington Post, democracy is better served by having daily White House press briefings than not having them:
It is true that the briefings can be boring...But it is still vital to a democracy that a representative of the president present himself every day. Everyone benefits when the government has to face that daily ordeal. It was at a White House briefing that Press Secretary Ron Ziegler on April 17, 1973 was forced to backtrack on months of Watergate evasions and declare his previous statements “inoperative.” It was at White House briefings that press secretaries for George W. Bush had to try to explain why no weapons of mass destruction had been found in Iraq. And it was at White House briefings that Jay Carney was forced to explain the problems with the healthcare.gov website. article link

Spicer (and the Trump Administration) got off on the wrong foot with the very first press briefing in which Spicer denounced the fake news photos of the Inauguration Day crowds. That was very revealing. First, that the administration would contend, photos do lie. Second, that the news media would orchestrate an effort to detract from the new president in a very petty way.

Imagine the difference if Trump (or his mouthpiece) had said:
We were a bit disappointed at the turnout, I admit that. But I think the comparisons with Barack Obama's inauguration are a bit unfair; that was a truly historic moment. But don't go away! Come back in 2020, after we've had a chance to do some of the things we plan to do for the American people, all of the American people,, and you're going to see a massive crowd!

Everybody would have chuckled and thought, "Maybe Trump isn't going to be so bad after all." Instead a lot of people thought of the old Bette Davis line: "Fasten your seat belts, this is going to be a bumpy night four years."

I came into it late -- I'd only seen the SNL version of that first press conference (and this without even knowing who Melissa McCarthy was) reported later in the press. Then I saw the original -- ...oh!

Hmmm. Once again I followed the rules about NOT doing the asterisks myself. Is the auto censor failing somehow?????

I follow that, I am sure some of them are scumbags instead!!!! There is a definitional difference. Or they could even be ********!!!!!

And, this time the asterisker works like it is supposedly supposed to!!!!

May be sooner rather than later; news feeds this morning are reporting a "major shakeup" in the works... Including Spicer.

That "major shakeup" may not be of the regime's doing. Twitter is going quietly nuts with rumors of major arrests within the next 48-72 hours. Multiple sources with at least some cred behind them.

Twitter's also going nuts about the rumor that Katy Perry will be a judge on "American Idol". And did you hear about that squirrel that stole a taco and ate it, halfway up a tree?

Don't count your chickens until they're lying in the back of a police car, covered in bruises from being beaten by rubber hoses.

Agreed. The hate for Trump is fascinating.

Fascinating but also justified. Unlike the hate for Obama.

Could it be that the left hates Trump because he fights back using the same tactics the left does?

People hated Obama because he changed the country as we knew it?

Oh, I hate Trump. Hated him for decades. Even when he was a Democrat. But I'm not a fan of guilt by association. That's just unfair in my book.

Nope. I hate Trump because he is an ignorant cruel sexist bigoted narcissistic man incapable of telling the truth.

People hated Obama because he changed the country as we knew it?

Obama changed the country? You mean by providing health care for the poor? What an awful beast.
