I seem to be in a serious minority here (or completely alone?)...

My first (and only) take on the Trump tweet was that he continues to believe the NSA has captures of all of his calls, made or taken.

I can't quite wrap my head around the idea that he set up some Tricky Dick style recoding system, especially to include presumably the personal dining space... but it seems nearly everyone else in the English speaking world thinks exactly that.

Not just Trumpers. The whole piece is an excellent indictment of the emptiness that has encompassed the Republican Party by abandoning conservatism is favor of trolling. The lulz are not a sufficient end goal to maintain the movement.

I'm not sure its just trolling, I think there's a big dose of desperation in there. After all the choice for them is either 'We really stuck it to those Obamacare loving liberals with the AHCA', or 'Wait a minute, is mom still going to be able to afford health insurance?' Better to keep making the snarky remarks and laughing loud to drown out the anxious little voice in the back of their minds telling Trump voters they ****** up.

I certainly don't think so. I think it was a transparent bluff.

But maybe your interpretation is correct. Who knows?

I could see it re the supposed two phone calls.

Trump believes he was wire tapped. He thinks he's being spied on. So I can see Trump referencing the tapes talking about the imaginary NSA wiretapping. His grasp of real-reality often fades in and out of his alt-reality world. And in that alt-reality he also believes Comey did tell Trump he wasn't being investigated.

I'd say that Trump's actions has already been so terrible that it's fair to say that this Presidency is already over the edge and we're just waiting for the train to hit rock bottom.

Don't worry though. American has gone through a lot of tough situations before. At least Trump isn't as bad as Hitler (at least yet) so Americans just gotta grin and bear all this crazies.

Yet after Trump, his voters remain, as wanting of reason as they are brimming with certainty. The GOP is now the bread and circus party; everything else is frankly too complicated, the "nobody knew" kinda stuff only eggheads love.

Anyhow, this Comey/Russia business will end with a good 30%+ of the electorate thinking the Deep State -- and whatever sick racist conspiracies they tack on -- are guilty for taking down their hero... or trying to do so before Trump's "Great Restoration."

He's only doing a little bit worse than William Henry Harrison was at this point in his term.

Wasn't Harrison the President who died like a month after he delivered the longest inaugural address? So Trump is beating out the dead guy? LMAO

Of course they have his every call captured, as they have yours and mine. In year what, four or five after Snowden, it is amazing (although not surprising) how crappy a job the pre$$titutes have done to inform the public about this. They capture everything because they can, it's dirt cheap. And as long as they don't look at it, they insist there is no spying going on.

I doubt Trump has wired up the White House like Nixon did. Its a lesson that was a big warning to politicians. Trump lived through the Nixon years. It was the tapes that did Nixon in. He tried to claim executive when they were subpoenaed but the SC didn't buy it. 8 to 0

And now it is precedence.

But hey, Trump thinks he can get away with anything. So maybe.

I've read that the White House records all calls in and out as a matter of policy - that wasn't confirmed with anything resembling confidence (and did dummy call from the cell phone he uses to tweet?).

I almost get the impression that it's a straight up bluff. An attempt to preemptively intimidate Comey.

I really don't know. Consider how wildly inaccurate his "wiretapp" claim was. Any and all possibilities are on the table.

It's worth noting that Buzzfeed reported last year that Trump allegedly listened in on phone lines at Mar-a-Lago.

At Mar-a-Lago, the Palm Beach resort he runs as a club for paying guests and celebrities, Donald Trump had a telephone console installed in his bedroom that acted like a switchboard, connecting to every phone extension on the estate, according to six former workers. Several of them said he used that console to eavesdrop on calls involving staff.

...

BuzzFeed News spoke with six former employees familiar with the phone system at the estate.

Four of them — speaking on condition of anonymity because they signed nondisclosure agreements — said that Trump listened in on phone calls at the club during the mid-2000s. They did not know if he eavesdropped more recently.

They said he listened in on calls between club employees or, in some cases, between staff and guests. None of them knew of Trump eavesdropping on guests or members talking on private calls with people who were not employees of Mar-a-Lago. They also said that Trump could eavesdrop only on calls made on the club’s landlines and not on calls made from guests' cell phones.

Each of these four sources said they personally saw the telephone console, which some referred to as a switchboard, in Trump’s bedroom.

Where have you read that? Cause I don't think so. They do log all calls though. But changes are made all the time especially with a new administration.

His supporters wont be grinning. They will be livid.

Trump said:
James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!
Good morning. As always, it's really impossible to tell what Trump means by this tweet. Is he implying Comey taped the conversation or that Trump taped the conversation.

I don't think Trump's implying either.

First, "Comey better hope" obviously implies that Comey wouldn't be aware of any recording, otherwise Comey would not have contradicted in public what he had said in private.

Second, the phrase also implies that Trump himself is not aware of any recording. Now, maybe he is, but it's phrased in such a way as to provide plausible deniability while making a threat, but I don't think Trump's that clever. He just attacked; nothing more than that.

The above two implications would seem to suggest that Trump is himself implying the possibility that some third party may have recorded their conversation without the explicit knowledge of either Comey or Trump.

"Maybe Russia can find the recording."

ETA: Of course, as I said before, I don't think Trump's that clever. He has no idea how the things he says could be parsed. He tweets thrice and thinks once (maybe).
