Bill O'Reilly: sexual harassment claims

$13 million is too much for the offenses involved. The reason the numbers were so high is because Fox was trying to protect $400 million a year in ad revenue by keeping everyone quiet. They were all settlements, the idea was to keep the cases out of court . This is my opinion, I don't think it's anything that can be proved, at least not by me.

You're right that these are settlements, so fairness has nothing to do with it.

Large jury awards are often not about whether the plaintiff "deserves" that much money either. The big ones involve punitive awards, money intended to hurt deep pockets. For better or worse, these punitive awards go to the plaintiff in order to give incentive to sue well-lawyered defendants.

The settlement was too much? Are you saying that if it was you, you would ask for what you believed to be fair even if they're willing to give you more? You would leave millions of dollars on the table just to be fair to some huge corporation? Screw that, get as much money as you can.

Big settlements like these are not unusual when you are dealing with celebrities. The value of staying out of court with its attendant publicity is often more than any money that could be saved by winning in court.

If it was me , I would instruct my lawyer to get as much as possible. In this case, the goal of O'Reillys/Foxes lawyers had nothing to do with minimizing the payments, or how much damage was done to the women it was about keeping the scandal out of the news. The payments didn't reflect the damage done, it reflected the potential harm that could be done to Fox News.

ETA: On the issue of calling them girls, they were all young enough to be OReillys daughters or granddaughters.

Are you claiming you consciously calculated your use of the term girls instead of women?

Come on, lot's of people use 'girls' to refer to women, it's not a big deal... until you do it in a case like this where it matters. Admit it, it was an unconscious mistake, but a mistake nonetheless.

Your manufactured excuse in lieu of an apology is duly noted.

Because the maturity of a female, and the measure of her adulthood is dependent on the man involved, right?

Next in line...

Columnist, attorney, and former Fox News contributor Debbie Schlussel appeared on today’s Pat Campbell Show and accused Fox News Prime Time Host Sean Hannity of the same type of behavior that lead to Bill O’Reilly leaving the beleaguered network earlier this week.

Schlussel says that after she turned down his advances, she was not invited back on his program.

How do you know how good at masturbation Bill O'Reilly is? And why would you write that comment and then "thumbs up" your own post?

Geez.

I do think once you make big bucks you become a target. That said, once you are a target you need to be extra cautious with what you say and do, because you have a bulls eye on your back. This many complaints over this long of a time period are not solely because he is a wealthy target. Clearly he has a problem. Bill is obviously quite stupid when all is said and done.

Tucker Carlson is unwatchable though.

O'Reilly is a rabid (apparently)* conservative liar. I have no problem going after him just on that basis!!!!!

* because I am not certain he really has any true beliefs except to get the most funds from idiots who will listen to his idiocies as they are idiots and tools!!!

Not a fan of Sean's but.. this one may be a nothingburger.

She has a decade long adversarial relationship with him (claiming/suing for example that he skimmed a vet's charity fund) and today may be clarifying the "sexual harassment" story (what the hell is "Law Newz" where I saw this).

If accurate... she's saying the encounter happened, but was not something she feels qualifies as "harassment".

No idea what's what... just wanted to suggest a separate thread if her claim becomes a thing.

The apples (Billo and Sean*) appear not to have fallen far from the Ailes tree. When the head guy is a perv, it pervades (see what I did there?) the culture. Note also the pervasive use of attractive female announcers in short skirts sitting on couches displaying their legs for the typical 60+ white male Fox viewer.

*Assuming there's anything to the accusation about Hannity. He's an ass regardless.

Could you expand on that? I am not familiar with what offenses were claimed, or what evidence was presented to back up those claims, but if they are truly minor that may change my position.

Can't say I see any sense in O'Reilly, but it looks a lot like he was sacked due to the advertisers pulling out than the network having issues with the sexual harassment cases... it's a bit sad that money was the motivating factor.

Well since we don't know if he's guilty or not (even though it wouldn't surprise me at all if he were) what other factors would have motivated them?

The reason the advertisers pull out is quite irrelevant to the network. Pretty much anyone will stay on as long as they draw advertisers and deliver the product (viewers).
