I believe that the US has the same sovereign right to control immigration as any other nation, only allowing it in the numbers, at the times and places of our choosing. I am for careful vetting of those we do allow to come in.

But there is something fell about the idea that we would try to stop people who were self-deporting (something the GOP/stormTrumpers have been wanting to see for awhile now, or so they claim). They were leaving, but that wasn't good enough. If they had been detained, they would have been sent back to a third-world hellhole. At least in Canada they have a fighting chance.

I never thought I'd see the day when the United States was perceived as being so threatening, so vicious, and so hateful that people FLED from us. Remember when we were the hope of suffering and oppressed people all over the world?

The reason you're perceiving this is because Obama ignored it for so long. Now the adults are in charge and this issue has to be dealt with.

It may be news to some of you, but SCOTUS has decided that the border patrol needs no cause to stop anybody within 60 miles of the border. Nothng wrong with rousting people who are obviously acting suspiciously.

Except that, like nearly everything the Right claim, is not actually true. Yes the numbers fell in 2015 and 2106, but even in those two years the Obama Administration deported more people, and for a lot of it considerably more people, than in any year of the Bush Administration.

Noticed this detail from the story in the link:

Officers on both sides momentarily eyed the luggage strewn in the snow before the U.S. officer took it, and a walker left on the road, to the border line.

Not exactly a totalitarian enforcer move.

The story says they were illegal aliens on US soil. I can't think of a clearer case of what Customs and Immigration is supposed to be interested in. Once the people were no longer on US soil, ICE left them alone.

I thought the East Germans were keeping their own citizens from fleeing, not citizens of other countries. Is this another one of those threads built on hyperbole?

They were leaving, marplots. That's what you people want, isn't it? Or is it your aim to make sure that, after being denied sanctuary in the US, that they can't even go elsewhere to seek it? That seems to be what the BP's actions indicate.

Yeah, just a bit of partisan hyperbole. This is akin to saying the US was behaving like germans because they invaded france in 1944.

Because it's soooo suspicious to want to cross the border into Canada, right?

What part of "they were leaving" do you not get.

You want them to leave, right? Why try to stop them? To add that one extra little bit of cruelty by ensuring they were sent back to the hellhole 3rd world whey worked so hard to flee?

So you explain the logic of trying to keep them in only to kick them out later. But if we did deported them, they'd be sent back to a third world hellhole instead of being in a country where they had a fighting chance.

Again, they were leaving. Why not just let them leave?

When you say leaving, you mean "fleeing the scene of the crime" right? I'm not OK with rape, just because someone has got to the point where they are putting their pants back on. Saying, "But that's what you wanted, for the rape to stop!" doesn't really make for a counterargument. If rape is too hyperbolic (which it is), try it with speeding instead. If I slow down because I see the lights of the police car, should the cops let me go? What if I get out of my car and start walking?

The job of the border guards is not to facilitate illegal immigration or emigration, nor to foist our problems onto Canada.

Yes, it is. Canada is not welcoming them with open arms.

According the link in the OP:
People seeking refugee status have been pouring over the Canada-U.S. border as the United States looks to tighten its policies on refugees and illegal immigrants. Asylum-seekers sneak across because even if they are caught, they can make a claim in Canada; if they make a claim at a border crossing, they are turned away.
They made it across the border, otherwise they would have been turned away and forced to remain in the US. What should the US officers do, say "up yours Canada! You take them!" ???

And for some strange reason he left the criminal immigrants alone.

Really? Did you bother looking at the figures? I guess not otherwise you would have seen that Under Obama the figures for Criminals deported went up from 105,000 in 2008 to 200,000 in 2012, a nearly doubling in 4 years.

What about it Logger. Looks like a) you were being dishonest or b) you don't know what you're talking about. Which is it? Hilarious? ;)
