US Officially Blames Russia

From my perspective, it's a dark joke. From the administration's perspective, it's probably a press release.

I eagerly await the convoluted and strained explanations from Trump's apologists explaining to us why it is that this demonstration of abject failure is not as severe a security issue as the (not) classified emails which may or may not have been hacked from Hillary's email server.

An explanation which I expect will once again reduce to "When a Republican does it, that means it's okay."

At least it will provide some momentary amusement.

We might be surprised. Some Trump supporters may demand he be locked up.

I think they're going to go with "hey, we're new, what do you want"?

CNN Trump spokespuppet Jeffrey Lord pulled this one out today quoting news comments about the Clinton and Obama admins starting off a tad rocky because of inexperience. Apparently these guys have a serious problem with scale.

On the Flynn front, it's being suggested Russia has compromising material on him as well as on Trump.

There is no way Trump could have known what Flynn did......

Besides CNN, MSNBC, NPR, ABC, CBS, newspapers.....facebook....CIA

I'm even more appalled by his Top Secret Mar-a-Lago Commander Bunker where the extreme vetting process boils down to:
can you afford $200,000/year?

Trump's pal Richard DeAgazio has probably destroyed a young soldier's career with his stupid selfie.

No points for you possessing a paranormal ability in making this prediction: it is guaranteed!

Many Trump supporters will not even bother to think about it or recognize the. massive inconcitaancy and hypocrisy; others will actually believe whatever explanation might be rolled out by the Trump spokesmen if they decide that pretending it doesn't exist is not possible. The amusing part to me is the many in the Republican leadership who will expect us to believe their "explanation" when that they they don't even believe it themselves. I suspect the same offering of "explanations" by people who do not believe them themselves may arise in the Forum if some conservatives decide to rattle the chains of the liberals here.

Indeed, I keep thinking that eventually even some of the hard Left will realise that Putin more naturally aligned with people like Le Pen than any silly communists.

Based on my time spent within the far left (although never a regressive), I feel pretty comfortable in saying that will never happen. Putin could be strangling the last breath out of them, while telling them in simple english that he used them as useful idiots to promote his far-right, authoritarian agenda, and they would still meet their death defiantly blaming "the West" for being the cause of poor ole Putin, the victim, needing to strangle them to death.

Fyodor Lukyanov, chair of the Council for Foreign and Defense Policies, a group of Russian foreign policy experts, told the RIA Novosti news agency that it is not yet clear whether Flynn's departure could influence bilateral ties.

"There's nothing to influence yet, there are no relations as such. Our countries have relations shaped by the former administration which were awful, and Trump was going to change that," he said

Ummm... Seems like the Ruskies know more about Trump's plan than American citizens... or am I just reading this in the worst possible light?

Erm..... normalizing relations with russia has been quite a topic during the campaign. Actually it was one of the main attacks by clinton.

Remember when romney was laughed out of the room for suggesting that russia might be a rival? (He was as wrong then as the democrats are wrong now, after they have adopted that point of view)

You don't think it's outrageous (in the sense of being highly inappropriate) for the intelligence agencies to be withholding information from the President because they don't trust him?

<snip>

It appears that sharing information with him didn't work very well when they tried to warn him about Flynn. Not sure how not telling him would have made much difference.

And when they do share classified info with him it seems that his first instinct is to show it to the dozens of random people in the public dining room where he happens to be when he gets it.

Some reticence might be in order. Having the White House in general and the President in particular being one of the most glaring security vulnerabilities our intelligence community has to face is a rather unique problem.

It may take some time to sort out the best way to deal with it. For now, I think they can be forgiven a certain amount of prudence.

In theory, it's the President's call as to what information is classified and how it should be treated. The President has other considerations besides just keeping secrets. You can disagree with him, and that's fine, but if you're a professional in the intelligence community, I think you should voice your concerns internally (or resign and voice them publicly), but still do your job, which is to give all important information to the President (or his staff).

I didn't agree with Obama bragging about the bin Laden raid within hours of it happening, even though there could have been actionable intelligence that was compromised. I didn't agree with his administration publicly bragging about the Stuxnet attack on Iranian centrifuges either. I think he sacrificed national security for personal political gain, but those are judgment calls he's entitled to make as President.
